The Password Conversation I Had This Week

A business owner told me this week:

"Nobody would want to hack my company. We're too small."

Unfortunately, hackers don't care how many employees you have.

They care whether:

You have money
You pay invoices
You have customer information
You can afford downtime

Most attacks today are automated.

The bad guys aren't targeting YOU.

They're targeting everybody.

And they're waiting for someone to click.

Sunday Reflection

One thing I love about working in IT is that every business is different.

A machine shop. A law office. A manufacturer. A church.

Different industries.

Same challenge:

Trying to serve people, support families, and build something meaningful.

Technology matters.

But people matter more.

The best businesses I've worked with aren't successful because of great software.

They're successful because they genuinely care about their employees and customers.

What I Wish Every Business Owner Knew

Technology is not an expense.

Bad technology is an expense.

Good technology should:

Save time
Reduce frustration
Improve communication
Protect your business

If technology is making work harder, something is wrong.

Business owners should spend time growing their company.

Not fighting printers.

The 5 PM Friday Cybersecurity Check

Before leaving for the weekend:

Ask yourself:

✅ Are backups running?
✅ Is MFA enabled?
✅ Are critical updates installed?
✅ Does someone know how to reach your IT provider?

Most businesses don't think about cybersecurity until Monday morning when something is broken.

A five-minute check today could save you a very stressful Monday.

How many browser tabs do you have open right now?

No really.

I work in IT and mine gets out of control too.

A cluttered browser is usually a sign of a cluttered workload.

Try this:

Read Later

Then close everything.

You'll feel like you cleaned your desk.

Sometimes productivity is really just reducing visual noise.

The Most Expensive Thing In Your Office Might Be Free

I walked into a business once that had:

✅ Firewalls ✅ Antivirus ✅ Backups

But nobody had turned on Multi-Factor Authentication.

One phishing email later...

The owner was locked out of email.

It's amazing how often the best security tool already exists and just isn't enabled.

I use AI almost every day.

Not to replace people.

Not to avoid work.

Just to eliminate some of the busywork that gets in the way.

One of my favorite uses is taking a long email chain and asking AI:

"Summarize this in 5 bullet points and identify the action items."

Instead of reading through 27 replies, I can get the important information in seconds.

As an IT guy, I've also found it incredibly useful when troubleshooting. If I'm staring at an Event Log error that's making my head hurt, I can paste it into AI and ask for possible causes or troubleshooting steps. It doesn't always have the answer, but it often points me in the right direction and saves valuable time.

The businesses getting the most value from AI aren't using it to replace employees.

They're using it to remove repetitive tasks, uncover information faster, and spend more time on work that actually matters.

AI probably won't replace business owners.

But business owners who learn how to use AI effectively may have an advantage over those who ignore it.

✅ Users stay productive

And most people never notice.
Because success in IT often looks like...
Nothing happened.

Most businesses think about downtime only after it happens.

But downtime isn't just:
A server issue

It's also:
• Employees waiting
• Production stopping
• Orders delayed
• Revenue lost
• Customers frustrated

Not the expensive software.
Not the newest firewall.
Not AI.
Documentation.

One day you'll see an error and think:

"I've fixed this before..."

Then you'll find your notes from two years ago and save yourself four hours of troubleshooting.

Good documentation is like leaving presents for your future self.

Future You loves documentation. Future You hates "I'll remember it later."
