A look back at the exhibition design & branding for Reverberations: Lineages in Design History at . Inspired by and curated by and , the design was led by , with .c and .

The show’s branding came to life as a large-scale silver metallic vinyl backdrop for our Mega Mix video. A striking visual echo that amplified the exhibition’s optical energy.

Inside the gallery, visitors encountered a dazzling assemblage of historical and contemporary works, organized thematically to trace the reverberations of design across centuries, landscapes, and traditions. A long central table emphasized a one-room schoolhouse feel.

The didactics showcase our curatorial statement and a black version of the show graphic, rotated to evoke motion and sonic energy and set the tone for the journey ahead.

The branding moved fluidly across applications and form, weaving together a cohesive experience that celebrated the power of design histories in dialogue.

We’re delighted to share our design for the Huntington–USC Institute on California and the West’s () 20th-anniversary publication! With a bold, archival, and typographic approach, the design reflects the Institute’s expansive work in scholarship, civic engagement, and environmental justice across the western U.S.

To evoke urgency and immediacy, we used bold red headlines and full-bleed spreads in fresh tones of red and yellow—referencing USC’s identity—to create a dynamic visual throughline. Platak Grotesk brings a sense of archival depth, inspired by vintage posters and street signage, while Polymode Sans () provides legibility and textural contrast.

The cover juxtaposes red type with a black and white archival landscape photo to ground the publication in place and history. The table of contents was designed with energy and clarity. The interior spreads layer imagery and large pull quotes that celebrate institutional impact and highlight their voices and scholarship. The publication honors two decades of expansive, intersectional inquiry that feels both commemorative and forward-looking.

🖤 Polymode is excited to share our design for What Black Is This You Say, the illustrated anthology of texts on artist Amanda Williams (), edited in collaboration with Camille Bacon (). The publication is a richly layered anthology that builds upon her eponymous public artwork—designed in collaboration with Polymode, utilizing the typeface Polymode Sans ()—originally installed on the facade of in NYC (2021–2023). What began as a provocative series of Instagram posts exploring the many shades and meanings of Black through color and caption evolved into a striking public intervention, an exhibition at , and now this publication. The visual impact of the original artwork demanded an equally compelling translation into print—and we embraced that challenge. Bold typographic treatments, vibrant color fields, and thoughtful sequencing mirror the rhythm of Williams’ 17 hues of Black, offering an immersive, sensorial reading experience. Each color is accompanied by original captions, expanded upon through essays, poems, and prose by an intimate circle of Williams’ friends, peers, and collaborators—including Roxane Gay (), Corinne Bailey Rae (), and Jenna Wortham (). The design invites readers to move fluidly between visual language and textual reflection, reinforcing the layered complexity of Black identity and cultural expression.

Transformative Currents: Art and Action in the Pacific Ocean, edited by , brings together a range of writers, scientists, artists, activists, and thinkers—including , , , , and —to investigate urgent social and environmental issues across the Pacific Ocean.

The book’s design reflects the fluidity and interconnectedness of Pacific ecologies and cultural knowledge systems. The cover features a reflective, iridescent surface that evokes the movement and shimmer of water, signaling the book’s focus on transformation, depth, and the complex interrelationships. Interior layouts weave text and image with a rhythm that mirrors the dynamic flow of the ocean itself, with algae paper short sheets that puncture the book with oceanic trips, Indigenous prayers, and dialogues with contributors. The book was printed by , an environmentally focused printing company in Italy known for operating a 100% renewable energy print facility.

The publication accompanies the exhibition of the same name , curated by Coblentz with Katzeman and Duan as part of ’s initiative.

We are honored to share The 1619 Project:
A Visual Experience by ! An illustrated edition of The 1619 Project, with newly commissioned artwork and archival images, The New York Times Magazine’s award-winning reframing of the American founding and its contemporary echoes, placing slavery and resistance at the center of the American story.

Here, in these pages, Black art provides refuge. The marriage of beautiful, haunting and profound words and imagery creates an experience for the reader, a wanting to reflect, to sit in both the discomfort and the joy, to contemplate what a nation owes a people who have contributed so much and yet received so little, and maybe even, to act.—Nikole Hannah-Jones, from the Preface

For pride month we’re proud to share This Morning, This Evening, So Soon: James Baldwin and the Voices of Q***r Resistance, the catalogue accompanying the powerful exhibition at the , curated by Rhea L. Combs (rhea_combs) and edited by Pulitzer Prize–winner Hilton Als (.als). Published by and designed by and !

The book brings together artworks that feature James Baldwin alongside portraits of other key figures who had an impact on his life and situates him among a pantheon of culture bearers who were instrumental in shaping his life and legacy, particularly in relationship to his advocacy for gay rights. Well-known portraits by and are shown alongside paintings, photographs and films representing key figures in Baldwin’s circle. By viewing Baldwin in this context of community, readers will come to understand how Baldwin’s sexuality and faith, artistic curiosities and notions of masculinity―coupled with his involvement in the civil rights movement―helped shape his writing and long-lasting legacy.

The book relies on portraiture to explore the interwoven lives of Baldwin, (writer and activist), (lawyer, educator and politician), (leader in social movements), (artist), (poet and activist), (filmmaker, poet and activist) and (singer-songwriter, pianist and activist), among others.
