What is a good Microsoft Secure Score for a small business?
For many small businesses, 65–80% is a practical target. Yet when we assess small businesses in Los Angeles, many start between 30% and 45%.
That number is more than an IT metric. Microsoft Secure Score provides a snapshot of your Microsoft 365 security configuration across areas such as:
• Identity and sign-in security
• Device management and encryption
• Email and application protection
• Data protection
It is also important to understand what Secure Score does not measure. It evaluates whether security controls are configured—not whether your business can guarantee it will never experience an incident. And your Microsoft 365 license can create a ceiling on the controls available to you.
If your score is lower than you want, the most valuable improvements often include:
• Enforcing MFA for every user and administrator
• Establishing a conditional access baseline
• Blocking legacy authentication
• Configuring Microsoft Defender for Office 365
• Enrolling company devices in Intune
• Reviewing accounts, passwords, and external forwarding
The goal is not necessarily a perfect 100%. A well-configured 65–80% score that fits your business can be more valuable than chasing every available point and creating unnecessary friction for users.
