Hollywood has given medieval siege warfare one of its most persistent images.

An army storms a castle.

Attackers crowd beneath the walls.

Defenders overturn enormous cauldrons of boiling oil.

Men below disappear beneath the burning liquid.

It certainly makes dramatic television.

Historically, however, boiling oil was not the standard defensive weapon movies make it appear.

There are genuine examples of heated oil being used in siege warfare.

The first-century historian Josephus described Jewish defenders at Jotapata—modern Yodfat—pouring boiling oil onto Roman soldiers during the siege of AD 67.

Much later, accounts of the fighting around Orléans during the Hundred Years' War mention defenders employing heated substances, including oil.

So the idea was not invented by Hollywood.

The exaggeration is how common it supposedly was.

Oil was useful and potentially expensive.

People needed it for cooking, illumination, crafts, medicine, and commerce. Inside a castle enduring a prolonged siege, supplies could become increasingly precious.

Heating substantial quantities also required containers, fuel, manpower, and preparation.

Meanwhile, defenders possessed much simpler weapons.

Gravity was free.

Stones could be dropped onto men below.

Heavy pieces of timber could be thrown down.

Water could be heated far more economically than valuable oil.

Missiles could rain onto men attempting to operate siege equipment or climb ladders.

And some historical accounts describe another frightening possibility:

heated sand.

At first, sand sounds almost harmless.

But consider the armor worn by many medieval soldiers.

Mail was composed of thousands of interconnected metal rings. It provided considerable protection against cutting weapons while remaining flexible enough for combat.

What it did not provide was a completely sealed surface.

Fine particles could potentially pe*****te openings and become trapped against the clothing and skin underneath.

If those particles were extremely hot, removing them quickly in the middle of an assault would be extraordinarily difficult.

But there is an important caution here.

Evidence for heated sand exists in historical siege traditions, but claims about it being routinely poured through mail and “cooking knights inside their armor” are often exaggerated online. Armor also usually included substantial textile layers beneath the mail, which offered additional protection.

The larger truth is more revealing.

Medieval siege warfare was rarely about elaborate weapons when ordinary materials could do the job.

Defenders adapted whatever they had available.

Stones became missiles.

Water became a weapon.

Timber became a crushing projectile.

Sand could become something potentially much more unpleasant than sand had any right to be.

Boiling oil existed.

But medieval defenders understood something Hollywood frequently forgets:

You don't throw away an expensive resource when something lying on the ground can hurt your enemy for free.

There is a peculiar form of suffering that requires no actual disaster.

All it requires is uncertainty.

Someone doesn't answer your message.

Your boss unexpectedly asks to speak with you tomorrow.

A family member normally calls by seven.

Tonight, they haven't.

At first, there is only a fact.

Then imagination begins filling the empty space.

Maybe they're angry.

Maybe I'm losing my job.

Maybe something happened.

Maybe this is the beginning of something I won't be able to handle.

Within minutes, the mind has traveled from “I don't know” to the worst possible conclusion.

And the body follows.

Muscles tighten.

Concentration disappears.

Sleep becomes difficult.

Your heart may beat faster.

The remarkable part is that nothing outside your mind necessarily changed.

Almost two thousand years ago, Seneca recognized this tendency.

In Moral Letter 13, traditionally titled On Groundless Fears, he warned his friend Lucilius about becoming miserable because of events that had not yet occurred.

One of his most famous observations can be translated:

“We suffer more often in imagination than in reality.”

That sentence is sometimes presented as though Seneca had discovered the modern concept of “overthinking.”

That's not quite accurate.

“Overthinking” is modern language. Psychology today distinguishes concepts such as worry and rumination, and neither maps perfectly onto ancient Stoic thought.

But the human behavior Seneca described remains strikingly familiar.

His argument was not that danger is imaginary.

Seneca lived in an extraordinarily dangerous political world. He experienced exile, witnessed executions and political purges, accumulated enemies, and ultimately received an order from Emperor Nero to take his own life.

Bad things really did happen.

His point was that possibility should not automatically be treated as reality.

There is an enormous difference between preparing for something that might happen and emotionally living through it before you know whether it will.

Preparation produces action.

“What can I do if this happens?”

Anxiety can instead produce repetition.

“What if this happens?”

Then again.

“What if?”

Then another possibility.

And another.

Suddenly you are fighting ten imaginary futures simultaneously.

Seneca's answer was not blind optimism.

He wasn't telling Lucilius:

“Everything will be fine.”

He was asking him to examine the evidence before surrendering himself to fear.

That distinction remains useful today.

When uncertainty begins turning into catastrophe, separate two things:

What has actually happened?

And:

What am I predicting will happen next?

Maybe the prediction is reasonable.

Maybe action is necessary.

But perhaps you've taken one unanswered message and mentally constructed an entire disaster around it.

The future already contains enough uncertainty.

There is little benefit in paying its emotional cost before the bill arrives.

And that may be the timeless brilliance of Seneca's warning:

Prepare for tomorrow if you must.

But don't automatically suffer tomorrow today.

For centuries, outsiders described the peoples of ancient Britain as fierce warriors living in tribal societies.

But they left behind no written family records explaining exactly how their households worked.

Now their DNA is beginning to speak for them.

At Winterborne Kingston in Dorset, archaeologists excavated an Iron Age cemetery associated with the Durotriges, a people who occupied southwestern Britain before and during the Roman conquest.

The cemetery contained generations of individuals buried roughly around the final century BC and first century AD.

Scientists extracted ancient DNA from the remains.

Then they began reconstructing the family tree.

The result, published in Nature in 2025, was extraordinary.

Instead of finding a community dominated genetically by generations of related men, researchers discovered that the central kin group was overwhelmingly connected through women.

Most members of the reconstructed extended family carried the same mitochondrial DNA lineage—genetic material inherited through the maternal line.

The pattern stretched across multiple generations.

Meanwhile, several people who were not closely related to the dominant family were male.

That suggested something unusual about marriage.

The women stayed.

The men moved.

In anthropological terminology, this is called matrilocality.

Rather than a woman leaving her own community after marriage to live among her husband's relatives, men appear frequently to have moved into the communities of their female partners.

Imagine what that could mean socially.

A girl might grow up surrounded by her mother, sisters, maternal cousins, aunts, and grandmother.

When she formed a partnership, she might remain within that network.

Her husband was the newcomer.

Her daughters might remain there too.

Generation after generation, the maternal family could provide remarkable continuity.

There were already hints that women held unusual status among some Iron Age British peoples.

Durotrigian female burials could contain significant grave goods, and later Roman authors famously encountered powerful British women—including Boudica and Cartimandua—although those women lived in different regions and cannot simply be used to explain Dorset society.

The genetic evidence is much stronger because it reveals actual patterns of biological relationship and movement.

Researchers also detected signs of similar female-centered residence patterns at other Iron Age British sites.

But there are limits.

Matrilocal does not mean matriarchal.

DNA cannot tell us whether women controlled governments, commanded warriors, or possessed greater political authority than men.

Nor can it prove directly that land legally passed from mother to daughter, although female-line inheritance has been proposed as one possible explanation for such remarkable continuity.

What the DNA can tell us is perhaps more intimate.

Who remained.

Who arrived.

And whose family provided continuity across generations.

For this community, the answer was striking.

We often imagine an ancient bride leaving her family and entering her husband's household.

At Winterborne Kingston, the pattern appears to have frequently worked the other way around.

The daughter stayed home.

Her husband came to her.

And two thousand years later, her descendants' DNA still remembered which family had remained.
