Creepy local legends:
if you live in Kentucky, you’ve probably heard of the Pope Lick Monster by now. Since as early as the 60s, multiple variations of the legend exist- from a beast with the power of mimicking voices to the goat-sacrificing reincarnation of a farmer wielding an axe. Most versions of the legend consistently describe a half man, half goat or sheep creature seen near the Pope Lick Trestle in Jeffersontown, KY. Whether you believe in the monster or not- the legend’s existence has claimed multiple lives and injured many others who climbed the still-used trestle. Versions of the legend incorrectly report the trestle’s abandonment, but it’s still an active railway. Monster hunters given this information may try to climb the trestle and find themselves facing a moving train with no clear path off, and thus far survivors of the trestle don’t report sightings of the monster to show for it.

Perhaps this is the monster’s true power- not jumping onto car roofs or chasing its victims with an axe, but simply having a legend so enticing as to draw explorers to their doom. Stay safe, and Happy Halloween 👻

What’s more Halloween than candy? Try getting into the science of sugar with this rock candy recipe:

Supplies-
* White sugar
* Food coloring- try festive colors like orange, green, and purple 🧡💚💜
* Flavoring- you can get some varieties in the baking section, or check online for more adventurous flavors
* Bottled water
* Wooden sticks(think skewer width and length, no sharp points though!)
* Simmering pot
* Mason jars

Start by dipping sticks in water, then rolling in some of the sugar in a plate. Allow to dry. Boil the rest of your water with sugar and your flavoring- but save your coloring for the jars! You’ll need to use a few cups of sugar, but you can eyeball the amounts. After mixture is fully combined and boiled, allow to cool for 20 minutes.

After cooling, you can start to pour your sugar mixture into the mason jars, along with your food colorings. You’ll need to find a way to secure your sticks so your candy doesn’t touch the sides or bottom- using a clothespin to grip and hold the stick by the top of the jar should do the trick! You can protect your jars’ contents with plastic wrap or aluminum foil.

Now you wait! It can take about a week for crystals to form, but it’s well worth it 🙂
