Decided to do some non-digital work. It’s funny…you get so used to digital tools you find yourself pinching your fingers to resize something, only that doesn’t quite work 😂

In the day and age where people are generating images with artificial intelligence (Ai) instead of enjoying the process and satisfaction of doing it themselves, it’s become more essential to share the process. Transparency is key.

I used the finished drawing of the house from the previous page. One of the advantages of digital is we don’t recreate the wheel. I changed the house, though as you can see. It has a drawbridge and a turret as the magic continues to grow. I will color it from scratch because lighting will change. I already had a finished drawing for Philomena so I popped that in too.

Each colored line is its own layer so I can move those characters around as needed as I finish the pencil drawing. There were rougher sketches before this one. The first one doesn’t look even remotely like this. In fact it’s only similarity is the tree to the right. The big white area to the left will have text.

Facebook says it’s been 144 days since I last posted… well it’s most definitely out because I haven’t been working on this double spread for my book about Snuffy the Marshmallow Pooping Dragon and all his friends.

There is no text. The magic is just beginning. Philomena is just a girl carrying a costume, but what’s that in the sky. Look around and you may find the beginnings of Sir Tin Can and what could be a carriage for our guest of honor. It is just a house, but the people who live here do not lack the power of imagination.

Oh the updates are a-coming! I have so so so many more illustrations to do for this book, but for now, here we go. I am making definite progress.

The Phenomenal Philomena has officially finished the birthday cake for Princess Whiny-Pants. The only question I have, is why wasn’t this cake good enough for her?

I haven’t posted in a while, but I’ve been busy! A lot of what I’m working on I can’t share yet. That’s right! Super hush hush. However, I’m still working on my story with the Snuffy the Marshmallow Pooping Dragon crew. I have a page drawn and it just needs my signature bright colors.

And I finished the character design for Princess WhinyPants 😀 yes she’s smiling. That’s what she does at the end of the book, of course. Many thanks to Meowshmallow who’s absolutely not whiny at all.

You say it’s August…I say that means it’s time to plan your costume! This is an experiment, and if it works, I can design Halloween masks that can be custom made to fit your face.

A quick coloring tip!

Swatches.

What is a swatch? It’s when you take each of your colors and you color in a square or circle, and label it with it’s name. Think of those pieces of card stock you can get for free at the hardware store so you can get an idea if a certain color will give you smiles or migraines in your room. Some people do their swatches with a gradation.

Should you swatch all of your colors? Well, if it helps you, of course you should. I personally find swatching hundreds of pencils to be very time consuming with very little benefit. I very rarely if ever would find myself referring to pages and pages of charts when the pencils are right there and i can look at them. even when the paint on the wooden barrel isn’t quite right, you should at least be able to tell you have a brown pencil when you wanted blue.

Consider instead, having a scratch piece of paper when you’re adding color to your art. Sure, you might swatch that pencil three times instead of once, but some pencils you’ll use so often you’ll never need to swatch it. You end up seeing the color in real time, and you can test how different colors interact with one another. For example, you have a lovely burnt umber going down and you want to overlay with a blue to make some deep shadows. You can’t decide between ultramarine and indigo (Hint: the answer is both). You can test the three of them on your scratch paper. You can even label and keep your scratch paper as notes so you can see how they interacted for a different project to save time. What you didn’t do? Spend hours upon hours coloring little squares you may never use when what you wanted to do was color a picture.

But I DO look at my swatches!! All the time! And that means you should create swatches…but if you don’t, this is an alternative I have found quite useful.

I’ve been way too quiet lately, and for that I apologize. Life sent me on a crazy little loop and I’m still working on coming back to earth. It may be a little while yet, so please have patience with me! My mom went from being a fantastically healthy 71 year old who was running around, walking the dog, and living on her own, to a 72 year old recovering from a stroke, and needing quite a bit more assistance than anyone is used to. Today, she is back on her feet, but we aren’t quite sure why her refrigerator isn’t running-and I don’t mean the old favorite prank call.

Anyhow, in between the hilarity of strange requests to find the griddle plug, I have been continuing the quest to bring you Doodles to Bug You…and i have thought of a horrendously wonderful potential title for a book of underwater life…You guessed it! Doodles to Drown You. I know. It’s terrible. But hey. At least you can be assured that this horribly titled coloring book wasn’t AI as if it was, I’d release it tomorrow. That gives me plenty of time to talk myself out of it.

So that’s where I am. Maybe tomorrow I’ll give you a coloring tip. Okay, I’m not going to promise that. How about maybe one day this week. In the meantime, I have to go catch the refrigerator.

Sometimes it’s a good thing to color in a page or two from a coloring book I’m creating to make sure they color the way I envision. I’d like to see her with some other color combinations but it’s working for me.

It’s been a little while since I updated all of you on the progress for “Doodles to Bug You.” Confession, I’ve had to take some quite unexpected time off, but as you can see, “An Ants’ Picnic’ is still progressing. The life situation is still going to slow things down, but not forgotten!
