Thank you for your patience with last week's global Canvas cybersecurity incident. We want to reaffirm that Liberty University takes the security and protection of your data very seriously. Information Services has implemented additional safeguards to enhance account security, and remains fully engaged in ongoing support efforts.

We would also like to keep you informed as to the update we have received from Instructure, the developer of Canvas:

· The data involved in the incident has been returned

· They have received confirmation of data destruction (shred logs)

· They have stated that no customers will be extorted, publicly or otherwise

· This agreement applies to all impacted institutions, and no further action is required by Liberty or its users

Canvas Service Restored 🎉

Canvas services have been fully restored after a nationwide cybersecurity issue that impacted multiple schools.

We took precautionary steps to help keep our systems and users safe. You may notice some multi-factor authentication updates as security is strengthened —- but there’s no sign that Liberty University accounts were affected.

While Instructure has provided notice that Canvas services have been restored following a cybersecurity incident, out of an abundance of caution, Liberty University is taking additional steps to ensure a secure environment. We are working as quickly as possible to restore services on our side. You may notice some MFA updates as security is strengthened — but there’s no sign that Liberty University accounts were affected. Liberty University is aware of an ongoing situation with Canvas affecting Liberty and many other schools. Internal teams are in active communication with the vendor about the issue. We understand the impact of this disruption, and want to reassure you that appropriate class extensions will be provided.

We will share more specific guidance as soon as we hav clarity on the duration of the outage. If you encounter a prompt within Canvas asking you to re-enter your Liberty username or password, we highly recommend that you do not provide that information.

Some users may be experiencing slowness or timeout errors when trying to access Canvas. Our vendor is actively working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.

Update: Canvas Access Is Restored (8:37 PM)

Access to Canvas has been restored following the earlier disruption caused by the Amazon Web Services (AWS) outage. AWS has resolved the underlying issue, and Canvas is now operating; however, performance may continue to improve over the course of the night.

We appreciate your patience and understanding during the downtime!

Please be advised that the option to upload a file to an assignment submission using the Office 365 integration is affected by a known issue. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. We appreciate your patience as our teams work with Microsoft and Instructure to resolve the issue quickly.

As a workaround, if your assignment file is saved in Office 365 and you need to upload it for your assignment, we recommend downloading a copy of that file to your computer. Then, choose the option to Upload File to browse to the copy of the file saved on your computer.
