Plenty of these CD players were dismissed when they came out, and it had little to do with how they actually sounded.

We surveyed our community of listeners, and the 15 they ranked include decks with copper-plated chassis, respected swing-arm transports, and converters that still hold up against far pricier modern players.

The Marantz CD6007 at number four, for example, pairs an ESS Sabre DAC with Marantz's own HDAM circuitry. Several of the others still turn up cheap on the used market, which is part of what makes the full ranking worth a careful look.
