The health of America’s rural population is in crisis. Nearly 30% of rural hospitals nationwide are at risk of closing in the near future, affecting millions of patients.

Large urban hospitals have the patient population-to-care ratio needed to support the number of mandated providers, but hospitals that serve smaller populations don’t see enough volume to cover costs, or lose patients that need specialty care to urban centers.

Between 2005 and 2019, almost 170 facilities shut down.

Now, nearly every state has a rural hospital at risk.

However, there is some hope for these communities. For example, providing services like respiratory therapy, hospitalist, and specialty care via telemedicine can help patients stay in their local hospital instead of traveling to an urban care center.
