Maternal health advocates hope that the extensions will play small yet crucial roles in tackling the nation’s maternal mortality crisis. About 1 in 3 pregnancy-related deaths occurs about a week to one year after delivery, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“It’s really important for people to have coverage before, during and after pregnancy, outside of pregnancy, and we know that having coverage enhances your access to care,” said Usha Ranji, associate director for women’s health policy at KFF, whose team has been tracking how many states have extended Medicaid postpartum coverage.

Going to the doctor may never be a fun experience, but surely it can be better than it is right now. In 2019, even before the COVID-19 pandemic rocked the foundations of health care, an Ipsos survey found that 43% of Americans were unsatisfied with their medical system, far more than the 22% of people in the U.K. and 26% of people in Canada who were unsatisfied with theirs. By 2022, three years into the pandemic, just 12% of U.S. adults said health care was handled “extremely” or “very” well in the U.S., according to a poll from the Associated Press–NORC Center for Public Affairs Research.

Americans pay a premium for the care they rate so poorly. The U.S. spends more per capita on health care than any other developed country in the world but has subpar health outcomes. Average life expectancy is lower in the U.S. than in other wealthy nations, and about 60% of U.S. adults have a chronic disease. About 10% of the population doesn’t have health insurance.

Over 50% of Americans say the United States is not handling health care well, and almost 80% say they are concerned about accessing quality health care when they need it, according to a new poll from the Associated Press and the NORC Center for Public Affairs Research.

How Americans view the US health care system
For the poll, researchers surveyed 1,505 adults between July 28 and Aug. 1 to determine their view on various aspects of the U.S. health care system.

Overall, the poll found that Americans' satisfaction with the U.S. health care system is low. More than half of respondents said the country does not handle health care well, either in general or for older adults.

In addition, over 70% of respondents said the United States is not handling the cost of prescription drugs or mental health care well. Black and Hispanic respondents were also more likely to express dissatisfaction with the U.S. health care system compared to white respondents.

According to the Pub Med article, Complaints were more likely on resident services. The mean duration between encounter and complaint was 18 days, and it took an average of 12 days to resolve the complaint. Most patients (59%) had a complaint in the Relationship domain. Thirty-nine percent of complaints mentioned a specific clinician. When a clinician was mentioned, complaints regarding communication and humaneness predominated (68%).

The American College of Physicians (ACP) states that the increase of administrative tasks has made a negative impact on patient care.

This increase has prevented patients from receiving timely care and has also diverted their time and focus, creating a link to burnouts for our physicians.
