- Using rated chain for overhead rigging is critical because it’s engineered and tested for known loads and safety factors. It provides traceability, so you know its material, strength, and limitations. Unrated chain (like hardware store or decorative chain) may fail unexpectedly, especially under dynamic loads or over time. In overhead applications, failure can lead to serious injury, death, or property damage. Bottom line: In rigging, people’s safety depends on reliable, rated hardware—no exceptions.
