CERTAIN EXTERNAL HARD DRIVES ARE MYSTERIOUSLY BEING WIPED OF ALL DATA. Fortunately, in this instance, only "Western Digital My Book Live" drives that are plugged in using a network cable are at risk. If yours is connected via USB, this issue should not affect you. The best strategy is to always have your data in two different locations, with cloud-based backups being highly recommended. If you have all your data on one hard drive, whether that drive is in your PC, or connected via USB or network cable, you're one failed hard drive away from losing all your data. (We replace failed hard drives almost daily).
Storage-device maker advises customers to unplug My Book Lives from the Internet ASAP.
