Notes from our work day meeting on 8-27-26 thanks to Julie D.

Festival of Trees update. Our theme for the tree is blue and gray. Mary B gave a demonstration on how to make folded star ornaments. Every member is asked to make 2 stars for the tree in the coordinating colors in any size they wish. Stars need to be done by the November 12 meeting.

Crayon quilts are starting to be finished and turned in. We still need to decide where to donate them.

Sue E gave a sewing based Ergonomics presentation on sewing positions and stretches.

Pillowcases for foster children. Approximately a dozen pillowcases were turned in at the start of the meeting and many more by the end of the work session. They need pillows, pillowcases and twin or throw quilts. We will explore other ways to help them.

The Guild met for its business meeting, Thursday, July 9. It was a busy meeting full of announcements and fun. The annual picnic will take place August 13. Feel free to arrive at 10 with a potluck lunch at 11. Five dollars is requested as a donation for rental of the clubhouse. Bring fat quarters for the games and snacks to donate to the Children's Advocacy Center.

Sue E. shared a demo on Color Crayon Quilts. We will work on those quilts at the July 23rd meeting. Bring fabric strips that you share with other guild members.

Pam shared her gratitude for the Guild's donation of incubator covers to the Hurley Hospital's NICU unit. It was an excellent project with thanks to Mary R and others who helped with the pattern design.

Show and Tell features lovely quilts as well as our favorite quilt gadgets.

Our guild meets the 2nd and 4th Thursday each month (except November and December) at Bridges Church in Manistee. We begin our meetings at 10 a.m. Anyone interested in quilting, fiber arts and contributing to our philanthropic cause is welcome to join us.

It's Christmas in June! The Guild got a sneak peek at the 12 Days of Christmas applique quilt for Sleighbell Weekend in December. It is stunning. See the photo with some of the block makers below. We also received the No Sew Christmas Star Ornament Pattern. Based on a Norwegian design, our Festival of Trees entry is going to be beautiful. See Deb C for the pattern.

Our Community Support Quilts continue to be a high priority. We recently delivered 15 lap quilts to the Munson Manistee Hospital Infusion Center, and our members continue to create bibs, baby quilts and pillowcases to support Lighthouse Pregnancy Center, Health Department and Staircase Youth Services.

Our new Support Quilt project is NICU isolete covers. These covers help shield newborns in intensive care units from harsh lighting which helps sleep and speeds recovery. Mary R shared her prototype today (see photo) and she has workable dimensions with clearer instructions. We'll work on those at our Thursday, June 25 meeting at 10 am. Feel free to bring a sewing machine, but we'll also need measurers and cutters. Each isolete uses approximately 2.5 yards of 100% fun cotton print and 2.5 yards of dark (black or navy) 100% cotton print, both prewashed which members may donate. Many Thanks to Mary for preparing a prototype for us.

Our annual summer picnic is August 13 at 11 am at the regular location. Bring a $5 donation and a dish to pass. The fat quarter toss is a tradition, so don't forget to bring your fat quarter. Also, Jan's granddaughter is working on her Child Advocacy Donation project, so bring juice boxes and snack bars to donate.

Updates from the May 14 meeting courtesy of Julie D.

Donates to Tight Lines for Troops included 317 bag items. 6 quilts, 2 afghans, a tote, ornaments, a scarf, flag mug rug, hats, gift cards, and a gift basket.

Ongoing Donation Opportunities: Staircase quilts, pillowcases, Veteran’s quilts, items for October’s breast cancer event, quilts and backings of all kinds. Blocks for October's event are due to Cherri K by the end of May.

May 28 is our Quilt Till You Wilt day. The church doors will
open at 9:30 am. Please bring all your sewing supplies, a dish to pass, snacks to share, and extension cords and plug sticks. A $5 donation will be collected for the church to cover costs. Cold drinks will be provided. We might also make a Dairy Queen run. :)

Summer picnic is scheduled for August 13. More information to follow.

Sunshine and the promise of Spring welcomed members and one guest to the MVQG today. Our fearless leader Deb C let us know that 17 quilts were finished at the last two sew-ins days. They are ready to be distributed to those in need.

Sue A was the winner of the Spring Fat Quarter basket. The theme next month is flower prints. Bring a fat quarter if you want to be in the drawing.

We are still accepting mug rugs, hot pads and quilts for Tightlines for Troops. Our guild is donating 6 quilts and 300 items to be included in the veteran thank you gift bags.

Our next project is creation of quilt blocks and give away items for the Fall Cancer Walk. Deadline for those items is September 24. See Cheri K for information.

Our learning program on April 23 will be led by Julie D who will demonstrate fl**ge binding on a table runner. Patterns for the table runner were available at today's meeting. You'll see a photo of three of our members who made sample runners in the Show and Tell session. Several members have finished their Lake Michigan paper piecing project. Stay tuned for a group photo when all complete their projects.

Join us for sew in day, Thursday, April 23 from 10 to 2 p.m. at Bridges Church, Manistee, MI. Bring your machine, prepared for fun.

And our next business meeting is Thursday, May 14, at the above mentioned location. We welcome anyone with an interest in fiber arts.

Spring faked us a bit this week, but the sun was shining on a slight overnight snowfall, and the Manistee Victorian Quilt Guild was shining too at the March 11 meeting.

To recap:
Our Second February Meeting resulted in several quilts near completion. Our Second January meeting netted 76 fabric balls and bears that were donated to our local foster care program.
And today, four quilts, one pillowcase and 168 takeaway gifts for Tightlines for Troops were donated by guild members. We also have three quilts to donate to Tightlines. These red, white and blue beauties are featured in our show and tell photos below. Donations of takeaway gifts for Tightlines will be accepted until May 3. Contact Mary R to make your donation.

TK Quilting, one of our champions in Manistee, donated a baby quilt. Our philanthropic efforts are off to a good start for 2026.

The paper piecing challenge has concluded. Julie D handed out the final instructions for assembly of the blocks. We are so excited to see all our finished quilts soon as we honor the memory Lisa Byker, a Grand Haven friend of Julie's, who designed the quilt.

Our next meeting is Thursday, March 26 from 10-2 at Bridges Church in Manistee. We will finish tying quilts so that we'll have some more to share with those in need in our community.

Anyone interested in quilting or fiber arts is always welcome to join us. We meet the 2nd and 4th Thursdays at 10 am at Bridges Church on 1st Street in Manistee.

Happy Almost Valentine's Day to everyone from the Manistee Victorian Quilt Guild. We had a great monthly business meeting today including some Valentine's Day snacks.

We collected fabric toys (balls and bears) for our first 2026 project

Our February 26th meeting will be devoted to preparing some quilts for the Infusion Center at Manistee Munson Hospital. Bring a sewing machine to finish the tops and prep for finish, or come prepared to finish quilts by tying. Don't know how to finish or tie? Don't worry! We'll have a short lesson on quilt top prep and tying.

If you have the following for the infusion quilts, bring them to the meeting:
Small quilts with dimensions close to 45" x 65". Backing of the same size for the quilts, floss, pearl cotton and yarn for tying. Virginia will arrange for the batting. If you have favorite scissors, bring those too with your name on them.

Julie D handed out the last block patterns for the paper piecing challenge. Next month she will include the instructions for assembly of the blocks.

The Manistee Victorian Quilt Guild made it to 2026. Our first meeting of 2026 was full of new opportunities, reflection, projects and fun.

And speaking of that...our next meeting is Jan 22. Join us for "Build a Bear or Ball" Day. We'll be working on behalf of the Tri-County Youth Foster Care organization (serving Manistee, Mason and Benzie counties). We're making the cutest stuffed bears ever, and soft, plush balls in two sizes. Flannel fabric, or "forgiving" fabric seems to work best. Bring your sewing machine, an extension cord, and a sack lunch between 9:30 and 10:00 am and stay until 3 pm if you like. We'll provide the patterns.

Project Binders were distributed today to help keep us organized this year. We're already adding to the wonderful starter kit that our 2026 President, Deb C, organized.

Seems like we just put most of the Christmas stuff up for the year, but Christmas blocks for our 2026 Festival of Lights Quilt are due by April.

Our 2025 Quilt, "Santa In the Woods," won an award at the Festival this past Christmas.

The "warm fuzzy" moment in our meeting today was Sally W's 2025 Projects report. Our Guild did an incredible job of supporting those most in need in our community.

We donated more than 440 quilts and quilted items this year to 17 agencies and individuals. We served house fire victims, foster care children, veterans, domestic violence victims, abused children, NICU babies, new mothers, homeless youth, cancer patients, special needs students, and seniors in care facilities.

When Sally was done reading the list and giving us some details regarding the recipients we touched, we were humbled by the powerful reach of our group. President Deb challenged us to double our efforts. It's a worthy goal. Our Guild made a difference for more than 440 people last year. Why not more?

We welcome anyone who has an appreciation of quilting arts and the love and comfort they provide to join us.

We meet the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of each month, at 10 am at Bridges Church on 1st St. in beautiful Manistee, MI. The first meeting of the month is reserved for business, the second for charity work and Guild projects. And our members make snacks!

As always, Show and Tell is the best part of the meeting.
