Wheat Harvest Underway in Jewell County
The golden fields of Jewell County are coming alive as farmers roll through another wheat harvest season.
Mike Nelson delivered the first semi load of wheat to Midway Co-op on Monday, June 15, marking the beginning of this year’s harvest deliveries.
Out in the field, Richard Bartholomew was busy behind the wheel of his combine, bringing in the wheat crop one pass at a time. The long days, big equipment, and dust-covered work are all part of the rhythm of summer on the farm.
From the combines in the field to the trucks carrying the grain to town, wheat harvest is a reminder of the hard work and dedication that keeps Jewell County agriculture moving. 🌾

🎣 Fishing Basics #1: What Do You Need to Start Fishing?

Getting started is simpler than most people think.

For your first fishing trip, bring:
✔ A basic rod and reel combo
✔ Fishing line
✔ A few hooks
✔ Bobbers
✔ Live bait such as worms
✔ A valid fishing license (if required)

If you're fishing with kids or are brand new to the sport, try fishing from a shoreline, dock, or fishing pier. A bobber, hook, worm, and a little patience can catch a surprising variety of fish.

Pro Tip: Look for areas where fish naturally gather, such as docks, fallen trees, rocky shorelines, or aquatic vegetation.

What's the first thing you'd like to learn about fishing?

Handfishing for Flathead Catfish only, is legal from sunrise to sunset June 15th, 2026 through August 31st, 2026 at these locations: the entire length of the Arkansas River in Kansas, all federal reservoirs from beyond 150 yards of the dam to the upper end of the federal property, and on the Kansas River from its origin downstream to its confluence with the Missouri River.

A handfishing permit is required in addition to a fishing license. Anyone handfishing may not use hooks, snorkeling or scuba gear, or any other man-made device OR possess any fishing gear except a stringer. Stringers may not be used until the fish are caught by hand and are at or above the surface of the water. No man-made object — such as a barrel, box, or bathtub — may be used to attract fish.

🐢 Slow down. Someone's crossing.

Late spring and early summer are some of the busiest times of year for turtles in Kansas. As they move between nesting and feeding areas, many find themselves crossing roads.

If you see a turtle crossing:
✔ Slow down when it's safe to do so
✔ Help it across in the direction it's already traveling
✔ Never relocate it to a new area

That turtle may have spent years—or even decades—surviving in the wild. A little patience can help ensure it continues its journey.

Have you spotted any turtles on the move lately?
