Forty minutes of hold music. Two transfers. Meanwhile a customer stood at the counter waiting for him.

He didn't start his business to troubleshoot printers. Nobody does. But when there's no IT person, the owner becomes the IT person by default.

Here’s what I walked into this morning.

The backup hadn’t run since spring. Everyone assumed it was working. One bad click and six months of files would have been gone for good.

The office manager had become the IT department. Password resets, new hires, the printer. None of it in his job description, all of it eating his week.

And the files lived everywhere. Desktops, personal OneDrives, email attachments, a USB drive in a desk drawer.

Nobody did anything wrong here. This stuff builds up quietly while you’re busy running the business.

That’s the job. Lock it down, clean it up, automate the busywork so your team can get back to the actual work.

There’s genuine relief in fixing the broken hardware you’ve been dodging every morning.

You know the one. The printer that jams every third page. The monitor with the dead spot. The keyboard missing the E key that you've just learned to work around.

You tell yourself it still works. And technically, it does. But every workaround costs you a few minutes and a little more patience. Multiply that across your whole team and suddenly you're losing real time to problems that have actual solutions.

Most of the time, replacing old hardware isn't the massive expense people expect. And the productivity you get back pays for itself faster than you'd think.

Your 12-person company doesn't need an enterprise security stack.

Small businesses deserve real security. They also deserve recommendations built for the business they actually run. Before approving a new IT or cybersecurity product, ask:

What specific problem does this solve for us?
Do we already own something that can solve it?
What happens if we do not buy it?
Is there a smaller option?
Does the person recommending it earn commission on the sale?

Sometimes the recommendation will still be worth buying. Good. Now you know why. That is how the conversation should work.

You didn't start your business to spend Tuesday on hold with your internet provider.

Forty minutes with the internet provider.
Another password reset.
A printer nobody can reach.
A new employee waiting for access.
A form that has to be entered into three systems.

Each problem looks small. Add them together over a month.

Then ask the better question: What did you give up to keep doing this yourself?

That might be sales. Client work. Planning. Time with your team. Or an afternoon you could have gone home on time. That is the opportunity cost of wearing the IT hat.

27 years in IT and I finally have a uniform that says "I know what I'm doing." The Red Kap shirts showed up this week and they're great.
