Just when you thought you were safe, hackers have devised a weaponized jpg file; that's a picture that can be delivered via email, instant message, or chat; that delivers a silent payload that gives them absolute control of your PC with no warning or indication...sort of.

You would have to download the picture, attempt to open it, and fall for the prompts designed to fool you into allowing the installation.

While unwanted, the program installed is called Screen Connect and is not a virus, so even an IT person may overlook its existence on a system. If you attempt to open a picture that doesn't open, you should have your PC double checked and ask them to look for a screen connect installation that doesn't belong. Many IT companies use this software, so they will need to check the serialization to make certain it belongs.

While Screen connect also works on MAC, the picture exploit only works on Windows systems.

If you used logmein, now known as goto, you should be contacted about this data breach.

The information present in the exfiltrated backups includes the following:

Central and Pro account usernames
Central and Pro account passwords (salted and hashed)
Deployment and provisioning information
One-to-Many scripts (Central only)
Multi-factor authentication information
Licensing and purchasing data like emails, phone numbers, billing address, and last four digits of credit card numbers.

GoTo (formerly LogMeIn) is warning customers that threat actors who breached its development environment in November 2022 stole encrypted backups containing customer information and an encryption key for a portion of that data.

Last pass was hacked. I have always said not to trust password managers. At best they are a single point of failure that can be exploited.

I use formulas for my passwords along with two factor authenticating when ever possible.

You just need a methodology. A password for Tom might be ou8Tom(o) and a password for Jerry could be ou8Jerry(o). Once you have your method down, you then get more creative so that a hacker getting multiple passwords does not lead to catastrophe. Next gen password for Tom is ou*Snl(o) and Jerry is ou*Idqqx(o). It is formulaic but just like locks on a door, it is one more step they need to break in.

This email looks...ok. It is better than most. They sent it from me to me with a gmail account of dedjaluis27 which I inferred was bogus. Additionally, the email does not mention a specific service and spelled my name incorrectly. But, I like to be thorough so that I can tell others why not to call them. So I called. They answered as Geek Squad and while they did not get anywhere with me, you can hear them gaining access to another person's computer in the background at 5:01 on the recording I made. The guy did a decent job answering questions, but I think he finally got wise to me and hung up. Maybe they realized I had changed my caller ID to their number.

If you are advertising "removing all issues that hamper the clarity of the essence of your work" but your paragraph is rife with grammatical errors and unintelligible sentences, maybe it is time to do something else with your time? Maybe focus on that spa business mentioned at the beginning?

Wait, there is an improperly formatted link! And it is...Spas. Not the type of spa I expected, I'll be honest.

Chrome has a new-"ish" feature which check's usernames and passwords against a database of known compromises and tells you if yours is in the list automatically. If you see the pop up, you should probably heed the advice, especially if you have not changed your password in some time. 1Password and LastPass have integrated a similar check.
