Japan Breaks Internet Speed Record by Achieving 402 Terabits per Second with Standard Fiber

In a stunning leap forward, Japan’s National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) set a new world record for internet speed in March 2024, hitting 402 terabits per second (Tbps) using standard optical fiber.

That’s over a thousand times faster than typical home connections, which hover around megabits per second!

Presented by network engineer Ben Puttman, this achievement tops Japan’s previous record of 319 Tbps in 2021 and UCL’s 178 Tbps in 2020.

Meanwhile, the fastest widely available internet is in the UAE, averaging 291.85 Mbps, with Singapore and Hong Kong close behind.

In the UK, gigabit internet (1 Gbps) is the top offering, while the national average lags at 110.99 Mbps.

On the flip side, the British Indian Ocean Territory crawls at 2.38 Mbps. Japan’s breakthrough signals a future where ultra-fast internet could redefine connectivity globally!
