9 years ago when I started my own business I knew times would come when I didn’t have a clue what to do. Well it is safe to say that I made it through that first time a baby cried for the first 30 minutes of a family photo session. Figured out how to show different poses to high school seniors that definitely didn’t want to be there. And taking photos at a wedding when it is pouring rain outside. Every job comes with the tough stuff. But it’s the great things that make you keep doing what you do.

The best part of my business and the reason why I love it so much is because of one thing. PEOPLE. Don’t get me wrong. I love taking photos and that is a big part of my life. But I would take photos even if I didn’t have a business.

“You” are the reason I love getting to call photography, my job. Getting to share important and big days, months, years with people is special. Watching you get married and have, one, two, three kids. Seeing your pets become best friends with your newborns. These are all moments you let me be a part of.

As the world around us is changing each and every day we change as well. Realizing how truly strong we are and how big of an impact we have on one another. We are going to come out on the other end of this as stronger people.

This has been hard on so many people and businesses. I’m beyond grateful that I have my health, food, and a home. I know being bored and spending my time fishing is a unique privilege. But if I can be honest, this has financially impacted my photography business in a big way, as well as hit my industry peers who make a living on events. I forget the power of photography sometimes. Then I see moments like this and instantly know that every mom out there can remember a time they got a hug from a little one they loved so much. This is why I love what I do.

I think one of my favorite poses is to connect a couple physically and have them turn away from each other. This takes the other physical and verbal connections away and pulls the emotion into that moment with one another.

As an artist we all go through this process of continual development. We find little traits and elements we love and tend to use. One of my favorite techniques in photography is leaving room for the viewer to imagine. Remember when you were a kid and you used to do homework that was fill in the blank. Where you put nouns, your favorite food, your best friends name. These worksheets helped develop that creative area of your mind. Where you look at this photo and that side of the brain kicks in. You see a bride and groom, someone getting married, love. But what you feel is your future bride or groom, your current wife or husband. You remember the day you were married or the day you will be. We fill ourselves not in the moment but in the feeling the emotion.

Been working on Jessica and Payton's wedding and can't help but share this moment. Jessica is a hair stylist and I find it so beautiful that she took time to do her mom's hair. A day that was supposed to be all about her, yet she showed love for those that mean so much to her.

Our wedding was on a beautiful, warm summer day in August. We went for a relaxed and laid back outdoors vibe. We got married in Des Moines, IA but tried to capture as much of a 'French Chateau/French country' feel. The gardens at the Salisbury House

I think my favorite senior photos are the ones that are simple. Creating timeless portraits that don't require props or special effects. Just natural and beautiful portraits.
