7 years!

Thank you to everyone who has been part of Engine House Design. Clients, collaborators, friends. You’ve kept this going.

This started from a need for change. The design world can burn you out. Long hours, missed time with family, endless deadlines. I hit that point and knew I had to build something different.

I live in a small Appalachian town and kept asking one question. What if a studio could support the people right here? Small businesses, nonprofits, and local talent. That became the purpose. Engine House was built to lift this community and create space for local creatives.

Then I found the building. Old, rough, full of character. It felt right and it all came together.

Today, Engine House is a small, flexible studio built on relationships and over 25 years of experience. We keep it simple. Good people. Good work. Real collaboration.

7 years in and I’m grateful for everyone who has walked through these doors, even the ones we had to rebuild after the flood. Thank you.

Have you spotted this truck around town? 👀

Behind the wheel is someone incredibly creative and intentional. Chloe is bringing artful, ecological landscapes to life in the most thoughtful ways. Every outdoor space she designs is rooted in care, not just for the people who will enjoy it, but for the natural habitats those spaces connect to.

Her vision goes beyond traditional design, blurring the lines between cultivated environments and the wild, creating something that feels both grounded and a little magical. That same spirit carries through her branding, reflecting a deep connection to the broader landscape we all share.

We loved seeing her brand come to life so seamlessly, especially as she collaborated with our cohort Morgan Diep on her website. Everwildlandscapes.com

If you’re dreaming about transforming your outdoor space, look up Everwild. You’ll be in very good hands. ❤️

Engine House is proud to support our local Animal Shelter 🐾

When they came to us for a brand refresh, it was an easy yes. We set out to create something that truly reflects Madison County, grounded in care, compassion, and a sense of home.

The new look highlights the heart of what they do every day, providing shelter, comfort, and love to every animal that comes through their doors. The archway in the design symbolizes that forever home they work so hard to find for each furry friend.

Every animal deserves that kind of love and security ❤️

Adopt, don’t shop. There are so many amazing companions at the shelter just waiting to meet you. Trout sure is loving his life at Engine House and on the farm.

Beacon of Hope is working so hard in our community. We are excited that they are moving their thrift store right next to our studio on Main St. They are all wonderful people doing the good work of feeding the people.

So glad this stunning image was added to the historic exhibits at the Capitola Mill! The walls there are full of great stories and artifacts that bring our local history to life. That bridge was something else — it used to stretch across the river onto Bridge Street, right around the corner from the old Engine House.

Hey, you're not going to believe this but we got a postcard from 1906!! Friend and former Capitola Mill resident John Davis found this post card for sale on ebay. After much work by Engine House Design and Henco North, the photo was able to be enlarged from the tiny 3" x 5" postcard into the 5' by 3' display you see below.

Over the years we have collected many pictures of Capitola Mill but never one in such sharp detail and so close to when construction of the mill was completed just one year earlier in 1905. The stone and steel Lower Bridge Street is sharp and clear in its detail. The sluice made from logs is amazing. The angled-roofed shed on the front of the building was called the wheelhouse and held a waterwheel used to power not only the mill's machinery but also the street lights on Main Street.

In 1905, the mill was only two stories tall and the sluice used to power the mill ran where the front driveway now exists. Several of Capitola's out-buildings can be seen on Cotton Mill Hill. The gorgeous Marshall Milling building with its mansard roof sits impressively to the left where the Capitola Dam substation is located.

The inscription is dated November 12, 1906 says: "Shall leave Marshall for Cincinnati tomorrow, Tues at 3-30 P.M Both well much love to all Binda Tullis". Weather records from this time indicated that Marshall was experiencing unusually cold weather that day and that might explain why the river appears to be partially frozen.

Stop by to see the photo yourself located across from our Fitness Center. And, as always, if you have history to add to this postcard, or to Capitola Mill in general, we would love for you to share it or place it in our community room for all to see. Thanks for helping us to keep Capitola's history alive.

A few days after our studio flooded, a volunteer named Ross showed up. No fanfare—just a shovel and a kind heart. He helped us dig through mud and loss, and came back two more days. I snapped this photo of him and promised I’d never forget.

Months later, Ross reached out—this time for branding help with his fine art photography. I had no idea what talent he carried. When he visited, the first thing he asked? “Can I see the tool room?” The same room he helped gut. Full circle. Healing.

Working with Ross was an honor. His photography is spellbinding—go see for yourself at stoppingup.com or at his booth in the newly renovated (post-flood!) Marquee Gallery in Asheville’s River District.

Thank you will never be enough, Ross. 💛

We love referrals — they’re how 90% of our clients find us! 💛
That’s how Salt & Honey Co. came our way, and it was an instant connection.

Taylor (formerly known as The Board Babe) moved her business into Charlotte, NC and wanted a fresh brand — and Salt & Honey Co. was born. 🐝 (Of note, she serves the Winston-Salem area as well)

A nod to the queen city, the feminine, and the sweet + salty magic only she can dream up. We were thrilled to bring this brand to life.

From stunning grazing boards to grab-n-go goodies and fun workshops, Salt & Honey Co. is all about bringing people together through food and experience.

Charlotte friends — go check them out!

What happens when a bunch of Gen-Xers raised on Appalachian Old Time & Ballads hit mid-life chaos, plug in, and crank it to 11?

Careers shifting. Kids flying the nest. Bodies creaking. Towns washed out by floods. Out of all that noise and wreckage comes something raw, loud, and strangely healing.

This is Paint Rock—our generation’s angst, sarcasm, and stubborn grit colliding with Appalachian tradition.
It doesn’t whisper. It bellows. It rattles the amps, shakes the floor, and hits your ears like fire and flood.

You’ll recoil. You’ll sway. You won’t know whether to laugh, cry, or mosh.
It’s confusing. It’s amazing.
