Server Virtualization - What's up with that?
Did you know that computer servers are running at their best Return On Investment (ROI) when they are running at approximately 75% capacity?
More often than not, we find under-utilized hardware at our clients' locations. When considering the cost of true server level hardware, this can be a significant waste of resources! Think of the cost of the server and the electricity to run and cool each server alone!
A few reasons to virtualize:
Increased ROI on hardware expenditures
Increased speed of "turning up" new servers"
Leverage software licensing to it's maximum potential
Decreased cost of hardware maintenance cost
Simpulse, Inc. has many years of server virtualization experience. Here are a few shots of an HP DL-380 Gen 8 server being prepped for VMWare ESXi 5.5 installation and the install process.
This server is going to be installed at one of our clients. We chose to install ESXi to run off of a USB key, physically located inside the server chassis. Why?
USB keys are inexpensive, and pretty fast. While ESXi has a very small footprint, installing it on a USB key offers the smallest footprint on your disk array, is easily replicated (cloned), and very secure. What? How is this USB key secure? It is installed INSIDE the server chassis. No one can walk by the server and steal the key, it cannot be bumped and broken off, etc.
