This scam is nearly perfect..... The scammers add a gift address to their PayPal account, but add your email address instead, that way it looks like it's verified (See #1) and it is actually coming from PayPal.

Then the scammers put the "Attention: Your Order....." information in the address box for the gift receipt. (See #2).

So, even though it did come from PayPal's mail server (blue check mark next to email) it actually didn't come from PayPal itself, but rather from a sophisticated scammer.

You have to be diligent with phone calls and emails. Now text messages. These were received a little bit apart from each other. Normally, they would just be deleted and the sender blocked, but coincidentally the recipient was travelling through states that had toll roads, so it took an extra second to verify.

Fortunately, there are a lot of triggers. Obviously they are fake. See notes in red on each.

Sometimes the work is so lazy that you wonder why they bothered. In another example of what to look for on a spam message, here's a good example.

1 - Noorton? Too many o's
2 - Not from norton.com or any reputable email account
3 - It's Norton (Noorton) but yet it says my Hotmail subscription is terminating. Hotmail is free.
4 - Your name is not {Fname} {Lname}. They forgot to merge it
5 - Dear ? If I owe you money you could at least know my name.

Keep vigilant and look for the scams

One more attempt to scam you. It's pretty obvious that this is fake. If you hover over the button (don't click on it), you can see it will take you to somewhere with the .jp domain, which is in Japan. The return email is at Yale university. There is also a grammar error that some might not catch, but a professional organization would look it over twice before sending the email.

It bears repeating over and over and over.

To Google, Facebook, Microsoft and other big corporations, you are just a grain of sand in the desert. They don't have the time to call you and tell you something is wrong. If they do, don't interact, just hang up.

Again: In case you skimmed it: The IRS, Amazon, Microsoft, Google, banks, large corporations, and pretty much anyone will NEVER email or call you and tell you there’s a problem and ask you for personal information.

Here's another one. There are so many things wrong with this that it screams SCAM!

Here are the obvious ones:
1 - the email address (isn't even a McAfee address) and the name is different than the email
2 - The date is in European order (day first, then month then year)
3 - The phone number includes the +1 which is the country code for the USA, but it wouldn't be necessary for you. A Google search of the number also shows it is registered to someone in Louisiana. Not McAfee.
4 - The total is huge! Even if you pay for 2 full years of the McAfee Ultimate Premium, it only amounts to around $400. But you shouldn't either way. McAfee is rated as the second worst antivirus by experts.
5 - There is no tax. Our government has found a way to tax you even if this was paid through an offshore business.
6 - They don't want you to reply to the email (obviously because it is fake).

Delete this right away. Remember not to respond in any way.

If you can't get sophisticated, go low-tech.

This email is part of a scam enticing you to interact with them and get you on the line.

We know it's fake because the company they want their refund from is a non-profit that doesn't sell anything online.

Remember: Don't engage! If you have the ability, don't even open these (some programs have preview panes), and just delete them!
