***CRITICAL NSA WARNING***
Malicious cyber criminals can leverage your home network to gain access to your information. There are things you can do to protect yourself, according to NSA.
The National Security Agency is warning internet users of increasing attacks targeting home networks. Their advice? Reboot your router now to avoid being a victim.
In an alert released last week, the NSA and other federal agencies said Russia’s GRU intelligence agency are exploiting routers worldwide to intercept and steal sensitive military, government and critical infrastructure information. Other cyber criminals known as APT28, or Fancy Bear, working for Russia’s military have been “collecting credentials and exploiting vulnerable routers worldwide.
Key Takeaways for Router Security:
Replace Immediately: Any router that is end-of-life (no longer supported with security patches) or over 5 years old.
Ideal Lifespan: Generally, routers should be replaced every 3–5 years.
Actionable Steps: Reboot Weekly: The NSA recommends weekly reboots to remove potential temporary "implants" or malware.
Update Firmware: Ensure your router is running the latest firmware.
Secure Settings: Disable remote administration, change default passwords, and set up a guest network.
