When I started this project, I had a very different vision in mind for what the end result would be. It happens pretty often with my branding projects actually.

The branding process is so tailored and collaborative, so even if I have an idea, things usually take a different turn once I start talking to my clients. As I get to know the business, the person or people behind it, and their goals, my perspective changes. Then the strategy changes. And then the design changes. That's just how it goes.

This project was created in collaboration with my Instagram followers (instagram.com/openswimstudio) and inspired by Uncle Iroh from Avatar the Last Airbender. The end result is a combination of Uncle Iroh's character and the input and opinions from my Instagram community.

And that's part of the beauty of branding - as you go through the process, you add information and perspective. And if it goes right, it begins to live and breathe. It becomes its own.

So the best advice I can give if/when you're developing your branding is to go in with an open mind. Collaborate with your strategist/designer to build the best brand for you and your business, even if that means it's a little different from your personal aesthetic.

The goal is a brand that excites and delights the right people, and helps you to achieve your goals.

Here's the thing some other brand designers won't tell you: branding isn't design! Sure, if your goal with branding is to get compliments on your business's "aesthetic," then design alone might be a good fit for you.

But if your goal is to build a better, stronger business, design alone isn't going to do it. But branding can, if it's done right.

Branding is meant to be a STRATEGY, and it includes design as one component of that strategy. And while design can make a huge impact on your business's success, that only happens when it's rooted in, and supported by, strategy!

Don't fall into the trap of investing in a design-only branding package just to keep up or look "legit." Invest in strategic branding that will actually help your business grow, stand out, attract the right clients, and lead to long-term success.

That's the investment that's going to have the real ROI. That's the investment that's going to last.

YOU NEED TO HEAR THIS.

Seriously, this is a moment in which language is incredibly important. And it's also really important for us to get back to basics.

YOUR BRAND is the perception that others have of your business. Your brand exists entirely in the minds of others.

BRANDING is a strategic process designed to help you understand your business, the people interacting with your business, the competitive landscape, and the best ways to show up to influence the perception that is your brand.

If you don't have branding, and I mean real, thorough, strategically developed branding (not a logo and color palette!!!), you're leaving your brand entirely up to everyone else. If you're good with that, then branding might not be the right investment for you.

But if you want to make sure that your ideal clients understand why you're the best choice for them to work with, you need to make the right first impression, stay consistent, and understand the best ways to communicate with your target audience. And that's where the real power of branding comes in.

I get asked all the time how I came up with the name Open Swim Studio.

It didn't start out as a super deep thing if I'm being honest. It started with a random word generator that spit out the word "open". Then I started brainstorming and the two concepts that came to mind were "open swim" and "open studio."

These two ideas have a few things in common: they're both times when a space or resource is made available to everyone; during both times, people of different levels are able to exist in the same space; and everyone in those spaces is working on improving & growing in their own way.

These concepts represented a lot of things I wanted my business to be: a place for everyone to be who they are; ensuring there's no minimum requirement for business owners to be a part of the Open Swim community; and open access to support and resources that will help regular businesses and people to grow.

That's why I have project options for various types of businesses regardless of income level or "success" level.

IT’S FINALLY HERE!!!!!

Say hello to the long awaited passion project you all have been helping me with: The Jasmine Dragon!

This is inspired by Iroh, from Avatar the Last Airbender, and it wouldn’t have been done without all of you, so thank you! (Check out my highlights I’d you missed it)

I loved working on this project even though it took me FOREVER to complete. But I’m really happy with how it turned out.

I’ll be putting together some mock-ups and more for this brand so stay tuned for that 🙌🏼

This is a great question, and it’s one you should be asking of everyone you hire!!

I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Advertising, which means I know my sh*t when it comes to strategy. My program covered everything from research and psychology to strategic campaign development and the nitty gritty pieces of executing those campaigns. But before I could create any kind of campaign I needed a deep understanding of the brand I was developing the campaign for. I always gravitated toward brand development and learned how integral branding was to successful marketing and ad campaigns.

Then, I left college and started working in a larger marketing role for a huge start-up (like a $100 mil start-up), and the first thing I did was a complete rebrand. That rebrand helped the company to be able to develop a solid marketing strategy that was efficient, effective, and cohesive. Not to mention the fact that it maximized all of our marketing and ad spend because we knew exactly why we were doing what we were doing.

Branding isn't some fluffy bs, it's real, tangible, game-changing strategy.

✶ Reconnecting with why I started this business ✶

I’m a little long winded, but this business means more to me than time or money.

We all left the standard 9-5 with hopes that we’d find something we were missing. For me it’s freedom, respect, and working with people I align with.

My goal with Open Swim Studio is to help values-driven businesses run by regular people to thrive.

We all have so much value to add, even if you don’t feel like it or know the best way to channel your skills and energy yet.
