3 tips for online school instructors

We analysed our own experience of online teaching and the experience of our colleagues and gathered some tips that will help you successfully teach students remotely.

➡ Tip 1. Stay online

One of the most noticeable disadvantages of is that students have little contact with their instructors. Most often, the interaction comes down to questions during Zoom sessions, and if people watch recorded lectures, even this form becomes unavailable. To compensate, answer students’ questions in chat more often, record voice messages, share links to useful resources. Let them know that you are always ready to help.

➡ Tip 2. Create a community

If people take a course with Zoom windows turned off, and if sad messages like “Hey, is there anyone here?” periodically appear in the chat, then something is going wrong. During , it is especially important to create connections between people. If you want to team up your students:

Conduct a student introduction session. Let everyone talk about themselves.
Start a study chat. It’s great when students have a space where they can communicate.
Divide the group into small teams and regularly give them tasks. Working on a common project always brings people together.

➡ Tip 3. Include more practice in the program

If the course program includes only theory, it will be much less effective. At MOST Business School, we solved this problem in two ways. The labor market is undergoing many changes due to pandemics, but good professionals remain in high demand. Who are they, and how can you find them?

👉🏻For example, narrow-profile specialists are named I-shaped. They appeared first in manufacturies, where the division of labor was the main principle. A person is responsible for his front of work, and you can count on him – he is an expert, does everything quickly and qualitatively.

👉🏻Technology development has brought the emergence of T-shaped specialists. Other than narrow-profile, they develop in the direction they want. And no guarantee that the direction is a vertical one.

What soft skills would be useful for all specialists?

Developed account for 85% of success in any profession.
That’s the conclusion of researchers at Harvard university.

It’s a completely different story with hard skills. You can be fluent in
Mandarin and Portuguese, know how to fly a plane or how to write
code, but that won’t be enough if your communication skills are weak.

Concisely, soft skills are tools that help to solve problems and work
with people. Most of them are connected with emotional intelligence,
and some with the character of the person. Unlike hard skills, which
can be strengthened through special courses or training, soft kills are
much harder to develop. Additionally, they are much more difficult to measure because tests or exams will not help.

Ideally, both skill sets should complement each other. For example, a designer apart from knowing Sketch and Figma, would also benefit from creative thinking, communication to talk with clients, and be able to work in a team on a large project.

How do companies use characters in training?

🟨To make it easy and fun to gain new knowledge, developers often enliven the learning process and develop game characters. They help to get through the jungle of online classes, motivate, but most importantly, they become an important element of brand identity.

🟨 For example, the online language learning service LinguaLeo came up with a curious lion cub Leo, who lives in the wild language jungle. All communication in the service is tied to this character. Leo conducts onboarding for newcomers, gives useful tips and helps to complete quests. Even newsletters come “from the character”.

But Leo’s most important task is to motivate students to study and metaphorically demonstrate their progress.

Today is March 8, International Women's Day.

A day when women around the world unite in the fight for equal rights and support each other. For us, this date is especially important. Our startup was founded by a woman, our perpetuum mobile and conceptual inspirer, CEO of MOST Technology Anna Kulp.

We decided to tell a little about how Anna entered the world of edTech and established our project

While IT and edTech are still, so to say, “male sectors”, more and more women are joining them. According to HolonIQ, 13% of the world’s best EdTech startups are led by women. They build unicorns (companies with a capitalization of $ 1 billion and more), gather teams of like-minded individuals and create strong products that allow people to obtain quality education and develop.

Anna Kulp:
I think that women in business are always about caring. This is one of the main features of our gender – the desire to embrace the entire world, to help, to share.
In 10 years of running a business school, I have clearly seen how learning and new skills change lives for the better. I have always wanted to help more people, and IT is the best way to scale a business. Then I decided to create a platform that will give thousands (or why not millions) of people access to quality education and provide schools with the opportunity to attract students from all over the world It was also important for me to create a community where people inspire each other and achieve goals together. There is a lot of energy in all this.
I knew a lot about adult education but nothing about IT. I never wrote any code, so in conversations with developers I understood about 70% of what they said. But nothing is impossible when you want to understand the issue.
Statistics do not lie, mostly men work in IT. In classical education on the contrary most employees are women. edTech is a very interesting mix that exists at the junction of the two fields of activity. The female approach is very important here: we understand how to build processes and where a person should remain among all our technologies. And most importantly, how to hug each and every user to make his or her learning as pleasant and comfortable as possible.

What role does AI generally play in edTech today?🤔
