50 years of internetworking!

On August 27, 1976, Don Nielson and his team from SRI conducted a pioneering mobile network test at the Alpine Inn Beer Garden (aka Rossotti's, aka Zott’s) in Portola Valley, California, connecting a van to the ARPANET.

By transmitting data via radio from a picnic table to the SRI office and on to Boston, this experiment demonstrated the viability of mobile, wireless networking.

Below is an image of the earliest connections.

As AI makes its way into classrooms, innovation needs to be balanced with rigorous research.

SRI Education researcher Shari Dubos has spent her career perusing how to to bridge that gap. From an accessible, multisensory chemistry tool that boosted student confidence and belonging, to tackling the growing data literacy gap and the rapid introduction of AI into classrooms, her research proves innovation is strongest when it's paired with rigorous evidence.

New initiatives like Golden Dome are pushing space infrastructure to the center of national defense, but can we actually secure it?

Join as we bring together the people closest to addressing the gap between what we can secure today and what tomorrow's missions will demand — and where policy, standards, and engineering need to catch up.

➡️ Gregory Falco — aerospace security & autonomy (Cornell University)
➡️ James Curbo — constrained cyber solutions (Johns Hopkins APL)
➡️ Joseph "Dan" Trujillo — space cyber warfare (Air Force Research Lab)
➡️ Ulf Lindqvist — senior technical director (SRI)

"Hey Siri… how do I draw blood?"

NJ.com visited SRI's Princeton campus for an up close look at our Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H)-funded AI platform designed to help healthcare workers.

We're working with Mayo Clinic and the University of Florida on PARADIGM, a system utilizing SRI technology that walks healthcare workers through clinical procedures outside their specialty — including blood draws, splinting, intubation, and blood lab work.

The project, PARADIGM, can bring advanced care to rural areas — where easy access to emergency and specialist care is critically needed.

Teachers spend hours hunting for the right science video. SRI's new LOVE Science platform uses AI to do it in seconds — screening YouTube's library for videos that match grade level, topic, and standards like NGSS.

"It's about transforming how teachers use what's already there to help students build a deeper connection to science," says SRI's Nonye A.

The team is working to develop an adaptive assistant that learns each teacher's preferences over time.
