Ask a contract manufacturer whose supply base you'll be using. The answer tells you a lot.

Ours is: yours, ours, or both.

Thirty years of building for large OEMs means large OEMs directed us to their qualified suppliers, and we kept those relationships. We didn't build that base alone. We inherited much of it.

But flexibility is only half of it. The half that matters more is ownership. Whether a supplier came from your AVL or ours, GMI manages quality, delivery, and pricing. If there's an issue at a customer-directed supplier, our quality team is the one on site.

A better quote starts with better questions.

When GMI’s NPI team engages with a new customer, the goal isn’t simply to price the BOM and return a number.

The team looks at where the product is today, where the OEM wants to take it, and what could affect the program along the way, from quality concerns and DFM to tooling, sourcing alternatives, and supply chain redundancy.

A successful product launch starts with more than technical requirements.

A contract manufacturer needs the drawings, specifications, regulatory requirements, and compliance standards.
But those only explain what needs to be built.
To support a successful launch, the NPI team also needs to understand:

• Why the product matters
• Where it fits within the customer’s roadmap
• Which dates are truly critical
• Who needs to be involved
• What success looks like beyond the first production run

The AI boom has a hidden side effect.

The world's largest memory manufacturers are redirecting more production capacity toward AI infrastructure and high-bandwidth memory (HBM).

That's fueling the AI boom, but it's also tightening supply for the conventional DRAM and NAND components used across everyday electronic products.

The result: memory pricing volatility unlike anything the industry has seen before.

Some DRAM categories have risen more than 50% quarter-over-quarter, with certain segments seeing even steeper increases. NAND wafer pricing has also surged as suppliers prioritize enterprise and AI-related demand.

Perhaps most telling: some buyers are reporting that pricing is no longer locked when a purchase order is placed. Final price and allocation are only confirmed when inventory is actually assigned to you.

That's a fundamental shift in how this market normally operates.
And it likely won't resolve quickly. Analysts expect meaningful new capacity relief may not arrive until late 2027 or beyond.

Our sourcing folks get into your BOM early, because on a build with 2,200-line items, one missing bolt can shut the whole thing down.

A medical device company came to us building less than 20 radiation therapy machines a year. Their system had 2,200+ line items, all FDA-registered, no swapping parts if something's out of stock. We assessed everything and brought in all the necessary elements, including design engineering, supply chain management, testing services before anything hit our floor. When a hospital has to knock down walls to accommodate your machine, "we'll send you a replacement" isn't an option.

30+ years in, that's still why OEMs stick with us. Not the contract. Not the price. The people.

That's the GMI difference.

If you're a hardware OEM right now, this question isn't theoretical anymore.

Memory prices up more than 50% in a single quarter. Suppliers confirming allocation, and pricing, only after your purchase order is placed.
Analysts saying meaningful relief won't come until late 2027 at the earliest.

In that environment, being lean has a different risk profile than it did two years ago.
A just-in-time strategy that worked perfectly in a stable market can become a production stoppage in this one.

We're seeing more OEMs make the uncomfortable decision to carry more inventory than they'd like, lock in longer-term commitments earlier than feels comfortable, and pay a premium now to protect continuity later.

It's not elegant. But it's practical.

The companies that will be most exposed in the next 18 months aren't the ones that chose resilience over cost.
They're the ones that didn't make a conscious choice at all and got caught flat-footed when allocation dried up.

So, the real question isn't resilience vs. cost optimization. It's whether you've made a deliberate decision about where you stand.
