The cheapest filter rarely delivers the lowest cost!

What matters is what happens after installation:
-Airflow drops
-Pressure rises
-Fans work harder
-Energy costs climb
-Clean air delivery quietly collapses
And yet, many decisions are still made on unit price, not on performance over time.

At Filtration Advice, we look at filters the way operators experience them—not on day one, but across their entire service life. A low-cost filter that clogs early can double the cost of clean air delivered. A higher-quality filter, replaced at the right moment, often delivers more clean air for fewer dollars.

This is the real race:
❌ Price per unit → race to the bottom
✅ Cost per clean air delivered → race to the top

When you shift the conversation from “How much does the filter cost?” to “How much clean air does it deliver per dollar?”, everything changes:
✅ Better system performance
✅ Lower total cost of ownership
✅ Smarter maintenance decisions
✅ Credible value-based selling

The future of filtration isn’t cheaper filters. It’s smarter economics.
Let’s stop selling filters like commodities—and start treating them like performance assets.

The Corsi-Rosenthal Box: Powerful Simplicity—But Are You Getting the Most From It?

In our last article, we shared what you need to know about CR Box. Read it here: https://www.filtrationadvice.com/blog/ashrae-522-the-proven-standard-behind-why-a-well-built-corsi-rosenthal-box-can-truly-improve-your-indoor-air-quality?id=113

From classrooms to living rooms, the Corsi-Rosenthal Box has proven itself as an ingenious, accessible way to improve indoor air quality. It's a triumph of DIY science and community collaboration.
But as with any filtration system, performance depends on more than just assembly—it’s also about understanding how filters behave under real-world conditions.

Here’s something many don’t realize:
CR Boxes typically operate at lower air velocities (110–180 FPM), compared to the standard 492 FPM used for MERV testing under ASHRAE 52.2. This difference isn’t a drawback—in fact, it can enhance fine particle capture (PM1–PM2.5), especially with high-quality filters.

However, not all filters respond the same way. Independent testing via FA-TCO Software reveals that over 40% of filters fall short of their labeled MERV rating when tested under standard conditions. That’s why understanding airflow dynamics and filter pressure drop is key to unlocking the full potential of your CR Box.

The good news? With the right filter and data-backed selection, your CR Box can perform at its very best, protecting the people who count on it every day.

Many assume that opting for a lower-cost air filter is an easy way to cut expenses, but the reality is often the opposite. Our latest cost analysis using FA-TCO Software uncovered how short-term savings can lead to long-term financial and operational losses.

We tested two filters:
🔵 Filtrete 1900 (MERV 14 lab-tested) ran for 9,500 hours, maintaining over 80% efficiency for PM2.5, with an annualized cost of $97.14 when optimized with our TCO Software.
🔵 Honeywell FPR 9 (advertised as MERV 11, lab-tested as MERV 9) offered only 38.42% PM2.5 efficiency—a drastic decline—leading to higher HVAC strain and additional maintenance costs.

At first glance, the Honeywell FPR 9 was 45% cheaper upfront, but its frequent replacements and poor performance increased its actual cost. With a replacement cycle of 3.07 months, its annualized cost reached $103.97—more expensive than the higher-efficiency Filtrete 1900 over time. Extending its life to an optimal cycle would reduce costs but at the expense of further efficiency loss.

Another key issue is misleading MERV ratings. Many filters marketed as MERV 10, 11, or 12 fail to meet those efficiency levels when tested under ASHRAE 52.2 standards. The reasons?
✅ Manufacturers self-rate filters without third-party verification.
✅ Some are tested under conditions that don’t reflect real-world HVAC performance.
✅ A lack of regulations allows misleading marketing claims.

The result? Consumers believe they are purchasing high-efficiency filters, only to discover that they are paying for performance that doesn’t exist. This not only compromises indoor air quality but also leads to unnecessary expenses in energy consumption, maintenance, and system wear.

FA-TCO Software allows you to analyze real filtration costs, compare different filters, and optimize replacement intervals, ensuring that your cost-cutting decisions don’t compromise performance or long-term savings.

When it comes to systems, one of the most overlooked issues is static pressure, often caused by undersized ductwork. This problem doesn’t just reduce system efficiency; it limits your ability to use high-efficiency filters that improve indoor air quality ( ).

Static pressure is essentially the “resistance” your HVAC system faces when pushing air through the ductwork. The higher the resistance, the harder your system has to work—leading to increased energy costs, premature wear, and compromised air filtration.

The Power of Duct Area:
🔵 A 10% increase in duct size reduces static pressure by 17.35%—a small change with significant efficiency gains.
🔵 A 25% increase results in a 36% reduction in static pressure, enabling better airflow without straining the system.
🔵 Even more dramatic, a 50% increase cuts static pressure by 56%, reducing operational costs and improving HVAC longevity.

In our latest blog post, we explained with real data why duct sizing matters: https://www.filtrationadvice.com/blog/defending-indoor-air-like-a-b-17-gunner-the-iaq-battle-in-hvac-?id=98

Lower static pressure doesn’t just improve airflow—it allows for the use of high-efficiency filters (MERV 13+) without compromising system performance. This is crucial for capturing PM2.5 particles, allergens, and airborne pathogens, creating healthier indoor environments.

When ductwork is undersized, even the best filters can’t perform at their full potential.

At Filtration Advice, we help organizations understand how these technical adjustments can translate into real-world performance improvements.

We recently came across a discussion that perfectly illustrates a widespread challenge in the air filtration industry—misconceptions about filter selection and performance. Many homeowners rely on recommendations that may not be based on actual performance data, leading to decisions that impact both air quality and HVAC efficiency.

An HVAC system does more than move air—it distributes both clean and contaminated air throughout your home. The filter shown in the image has a very low efficiency, allowing a significant amount of dust and particulate matter to pass through. Over time, this dust accumulates inside the system, affecting components such as the ev***rator coil and drain lines, which can lead to costly repairs, higher energy consumption, and decreased system lifespan.

A common belief is that MERV 8 is "good enough" for residential use. While MERV 8 filters (approximately 75% arrestance) can capture larger particles, they do little to trap finer particulates like PM2.5, which are known to exacerbate allergies and respiratory conditions. Some technicians suggest using an air purifier instead, but standalone air purifiers only clean localized areas and do not address the overall air circulation within a home’s HVAC system.

For improved indoor air quality, system longevity, and lower maintenance costs, MERV 11–13 filters are a far better choice. They strike a balance between efficiency and airflow, effectively capturing both larger dust particles and finer pollutants that affect respiratory health.

However, an additional concern is that many filters on the market do not meet their advertised MERV ratings. This means that even when homeowners believe they are purchasing a high-efficiency filter, it may not actually perform as expected. At Filtration Advice, we have developed a comprehensive database of air filters tested by independent laboratories. Our platform allows users to verify whether a filter meets its advertised efficiency, ensuring that their choices are backed by real performance data.

How does switching from a high-efficiency MERV 14 filter to a lower-rated MERV 9 filter affect air quality, operational ...
01/23/2025

How does switching from a high-efficiency MERV 14 filter to a lower-rated MERV 9 filter affect air quality, operational costs, and sustainability? Our latest study dives deep into this question with surprising findings that every stakeholder in the air filtration industry should know.

Key Takeaways:
✅ Efficiency Matters: The 3M Filtrete 1900 (MERV 14 lab-tested) achieved an exceptional 82.87% PM2.5 efficiency over 19.38 months, maintaining performance with a manageable pressure drop of 0.44 inches WC. In contrast, the Honeywell FPR9 (MERV 9 lab-tested) delivered just 19.32% PM2.5 efficiency after only 1300 hours, limited by older pleating technology and lower media density.

✅ Cost vs. Performance: The Filtrete 1900 balanced high efficiency with an annualized cost of $97.14. While the Honeywell FPR9 showed a lower potential Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) when optimized, its reduced efficiency came at the expense of air quality, particularly for PM1.0, which dropped from 81.46% (MERV 14) to 8.66% (MERV 9).

✅ Environmental and Financial Balance: Extended filter lifespans, data-driven maintenance, and high-density media filters demonstrated reduced CO2 emissions and operational costs. Strategic selection of advanced filters enhances long-term sustainability and financial outcomes.

✅ Real-World Applications: These findings are especially relevant for large-scale facilities like schools, office complexes, and shopping malls, where balancing efficiency, cost, and air quality is critical to occupant health and operational performance.

This study underscores the importance of investing in high-performing filters with verified efficiency through independent lab testing. As professionals in the air filtration industry, relying on accurate data ensures better decisions that safeguard health, reduce costs, and promote environmental sustainability.

Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is a silent yet significant threat to indoor air quality in office buildings. These microscopic particles, small enough to enter the lungs and bloodstream, are linked to respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, making their mitigation a critical concern for building owners and managers.

Recent research by Science Direct titled "The effects of ventilation and filtration on indoor PM2.5 in office buildings in four countries", highlights the importance of using high-efficiency filters like MERV 13 or higher in HVAC systems. MERV 13+ filters significantly reduce indoor PM2.5 levels by capturing a larger percentage of fine particles, safeguarding occupant health and enhancing productivity. In contrast, buildings using lower-rated filters (MERV 7-12) experience higher PM2.5 concentrations, which can compromise air quality and tenant satisfaction.

For those managing commercial properties, ensuring filters meet their advertised efficiency is just as important. Our independently tested database of air filters helps verify which products truly deliver on their claims, enabling better decision-making and improved outcomes for indoor air quality.

is facing hazardous air quality levels due to wildfire smoke, with PM2.5 concentrations—the most dangerous type of particulate matter—rising to "hazardous" levels on the US Air Quality Index earlier this week. PM2.5 particles are so small that they can lodge deep in your lungs and even enter your bloodstream, posing serious health risks. According to Newsweek PM2.5 concentrations are reaching "unhealthy" categories in areas like Altadena, Downtown Los Angeles, , Pacific Palisades, and Pasadena.

smoke isn’t just water v***r and gases; it’s a complex mix of microscopic particles and chemicals. When inhaled, these particles can trigger inflammation, causing symptoms ranging from itchy eyes, scratchy throat, and headaches to severe respiratory issues like difficulty breathing, wheezing, and chest pain, according to the CDC and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency

Prolonged exposure can even increase the risk of premature death, especially for children, older adults, pregnant individuals, and those with heart or lung conditions. California’s fires are also releasing chemicals from synthetic building materials, making the smoke even more toxic.

As a contribution to the whole situation in LA, we made a list of recommendations to improve indoor air quality and a step-by-step guide to Build Your Own DIY Air Purifier.
