Antivirus Isn’t What It Used To Be
Most modern threats don’t “hack” your computer.
They trick you.
Fake Microsoft popups.
Phishing emails.
Text message scams.
Fake tech support calls.
Malicious browser extensions.

These are called social engineering attacks — and no antivirus can stop you from clicking the wrong thing.

Be careful with “free antivirus” you find through ads or popups.
If your screen says you have dozens of viruses and you need to act immediately… that message is usually the real problem.

For most home users:
• Windows Defender (built into Windows) is very strong
• Apple’s built-in iOS and macOS protections are solid
• Keeping your device updated matters more than adding extra security apps
Real protection today is about smart habits, not stacking software.

If something online feels urgent or scary, pause before you click.
When in doubt, ask someone you trust.
Security isn’t about fear.
It’s about proper setup.

Tech tip from this week:

I ran into this on the last laptop I worked on for a customer. I replaced the battery, and when we powered it back on, BitLocker decided to be a little moody and asked for a recovery key before it would boot.

The good news is she was able to find the key using another computer and unlock it.

Here’s what that means for you.

A lot of newer Windows laptops automatically turn on something called BitLocker. It’s a security feature that protects your data if your computer is lost or stolen.

That’s a good thing.

But sometimes, if hardware changes or the system thinks something major changed, Windows may ask for a recovery key before it will start.

That key is usually tied to the email account you used when you first set up the laptop, like Outlook, Hotmail, or even a Gmail address you connected during setup.

If you don’t know that login or never saved the key, accessing your data can become very difficult.

It’s worth taking a few minutes to check where your recovery key is stored before you ever need it.

If you’re not sure how to check, send me a message. It’s a quick thing that can prevent a major headache later.
