First full week back and the inbox has opinions. πŸ˜…

Take four minutes off. Every HMIS team has the same cast of characters β€” the one who never closes an enrollment, the one running the APR at 4:58 on deadline day, the one who knows every data element by number.

We built a game about it.

Budget season is coming. πŸ“Š

Before the Q4 planning meetings start, we put together a Managed IT Toolkit for exactly this moment β€” the questions to ask, the costs people forget, and how to tell whether what you're paying for is actually working.

It's free, it's practical, and it takes about fifteen minutes to work through.

Especially useful if you're going into budget conversations having to justify technology spend to a board or a finance committee. That's a hard argument to make with vague language, and much easier with a framework.

Grab the toolkit πŸ‘‰ https://hubs.ly/Q04sGmNZ0

And tell us β€” what's the hardest part of building your tech budget this year? πŸ‘‡

Today's the day. πŸ—‚οΈ

The FY2026 Continuum of Care applications are due at 8:00 PM ET, and across Connecticut and New England there are teams who have been living inside spreadsheets and e-snaps for weeks to get there.

$4.04 billion nationally. Housing and services for people who need them. Enormous stakes, handled by small teams who mostly do this on top of their actual jobs.

If you know someone in the thick of it β€” tag them below and tell them they're almost through. It takes ten seconds and it lands. πŸ’™

However tonight goes, the work you did to get here mattered.

πŸŒ€ Peak Atlantic hurricane season runs mid-August through early October β€” and New England has been reminded more than once that we are not exempt.

Storms here rarely destroy a server. What they do is take out power for three days and take your phones with them.

The 5-minute continuity check:

⚑ Does your team know where to work if the office is dark on Monday?
⚑ Can your phones forward to mobile without an IT ticket?
⚑ Is your backup offsite β€” genuinely offsite, not in the same building?
⚑ Do you have one contact list that isn't stored only on the network?
⚑ Does anyone besides one person know the answer to all of the above?

That last one is the one that gets organizations. Continuity plans that live in a single person's head aren't plans.

Save this. Do it before September. πŸ“Œ

The nicest compliment we get isn't about our response time. πŸ’™

It's some version of: "we stopped thinking about IT."

That's the goal. Technology that recedes into the background so your team can spend its attention on the mission, the clients, the work that actually needed a human being.

We've spent years supporting nonprofits, human services agencies and growing businesses across Connecticut and New England β€” and the through-line in every good partnership is the same. Fewer surprises. Fewer workarounds. Fewer Mondays that start badly.

DID YOU KNOW? 🎣

95% of cybersecurity incidents at small and mid-size organizations involve human error.

And employees at smaller organizations face social engineering attempts at roughly 3.5x the rate of those at large enterprises.

Quick gut check β€” how many of these can your team spot?

πŸ“§ An email from "the CEO" asking for gift cards, sent at 4:45 PM Friday
πŸ“§ A vendor emailing new banking details "for this invoice only"
πŸ“§ A Microsoft login page that looks perfect but sits on a slightly wrong URL
πŸ“§ A text from a number claiming to be IT, asking for an MFA code

That last one is the one catching people right now. No legitimate IT team will ever ask you to read them a code. Ever.

Comment with the sneakiest phishing attempt you've seen. The good ones are educational. πŸ‘‡

MYTH vs REALITY ☁️

MYTH: "It's in the cloud, so it's automatically backed up."

REALITY: Most cloud platforms protect their infrastructure β€” not your data from your own team.

If someone deletes a folder in Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace and nobody notices for 45 days, that folder is frequently just... gone. Retention windows are shorter than people assume, and "the cloud" was never a backup strategy. It's a hosting location.

What actually protects you:
πŸ”Ή A separate, third-party backup of your cloud data
πŸ”Ή A retention policy someone has actually read
πŸ”Ή A restore test β€” done recently, not theoretically

Be honest: do you know how far back your cloud data can be recovered right now? πŸ‘‡

Friday challenge. 🎯

Every HMIS team has the same cast of characters. The one who never closes an enrollment. The one who runs the APR at 4:58 PM on deadline day. The one who somehow knows every data element by number.

We built a game about it, because after enough years in this world you either laugh or you file a support ticket about your feelings.

September is three weeks out. ⏳

Before your team hits full speed again, here's a 6-point tech reset that takes one afternoon and saves you a very bad week later:

1️⃣ Restart everything β€” servers, switches, workstations. Uptime is not a trophy.
2️⃣ Run every pending update. The ones you clicked "remind me later" on in June.
3️⃣ Test a backup restore. Not "check the backup ran." Actually restore a file.
4️⃣ Remove accounts for anyone who left over the summer.
5️⃣ Verify MFA is on for every user, including the ones who complained about it.
6️⃣ Walk the office. Look for the sticky note with a password on it. There's always one.

Save this and work through it before Labor Day. πŸ“Œ

Which one are you least confident about? πŸ‘‡

DID YOU KNOW? πŸ”

Ransomware showed up in 88% of breaches at small and midsize organizations β€” compared with 39% at large enterprises. (Verizon DBIR)

Read that again. Being small doesn't make you a smaller target. It makes you an easier one.

The uncomfortable part: most of these attacks don't start with some sophisticated exploit. They start with one person, on a normal Tuesday, clicking one link.

Three things that genuinely move the needle:

βœ… MFA on every account β€” not just email
βœ… Tested backups (untested backups are just hope with a storage bill)
βœ… Ongoing staff training, not a once-a-year video

Which of the three is your organization weakest on right now? Be honest β€” we're not judging. πŸ‘‡
