I like to think in very “logical” terms: inputs, processing, and outputs. We’re presented with things, our brain does work, and then we output things. In order to really shake things up both in ourselves and with those around us, I think it’s healthy to present completely novel and “absurd” inputs to our brains. To others, you might look like a weirdo.

As I think back on the last year, I can think of a couple habits that I’ve (finally) started doing with consistency. One of those is writing in my blog. My “secret”: build it into my schedule and protect the space for it.

From my experience there are two rough buckets of deadlines.

Very Fixed Deadline: tied to a particular external event or circumstance that isn’t moving (conference, funding requirement, book launch, etc).

Invented Deadline: an amalgamation of team priorities.

I'm thinking a lot about expectations lately and how often things "go wrong" because of the gap between what's expected and what is actually happening.

Expectations need to be both set and maintained. On a regular cadence, you need to check on your expectations. Is this working? Do we need to adjust? Methodically evaluate, consider, and reset expectations before they turn into problems.
