🚨 Think Before You Scan That QR Code 🚨

QR codes are everywhere these days:

✅ Restaurant menus
✅ Parking meters
✅ Package deliveries
✅ Utility bills
✅ Event registrations

Unfortunately, scammers know we’re trained to trust them.

A fake QR code sticker placed over a legitimate one can send you to a convincing-looking website designed to steal passwords, credit card numbers, banking information, or personal data.

Before you scan:

🔹 Look closely for stickers placed over existing QR codes
🔹 Verify the website address before entering any information
🔹 Be cautious of QR codes found in public places
🔹 Never rush because a message claims your account will be locked or a payment is overdue
🔹 When in doubt, visit the organization’s website directly instead of using the QR code

Remember: A QR code is simply a shortcut to a website. If you wouldn’t click a suspicious link in an email, don’t blindly trust a QR code either.

The safest security tool isn’t software—it’s taking a moment to slow down and think before you act.

I’m honored to be featured in the Pierce County Journal for an upcoming community presentation on cybersecurity.

On June 9, I’ll be speaking at the Ellsworth Public Library's Discover Together Tuesday program, sharing five practical things anyone can do right now to improve their online security.

One of the biggest misconceptions I encounter is that cybercrime only affects large companies or highly technical users. In reality, most of the incidents I help people recover from involve everyday individuals, families, retirees, and small business owners who simply weren't aware of the risks.

We'll be covering:
• Stronger password habits
• Two-factor authentication
• Email and scam awareness
• Safe computing practices
• Data backup basics

My goal is always the same: make technology easier to understand and help people stay safer online without the technical jargon.

I checked my Privacy & Security settings on my Mac a while back and found that Zoom had screen recording access. I didn't remember turning that on, and honestly wasn't sure when it happened.

The truth is most of us click "Allow" when an app asks for permission and move on. I know I do - It's just part of getting something to work. The problem is those permissions don't expire, and over time you end up with a list of apps that have access to things you've completely forgotten about.

It takes about five minutes to see what's actually there. Go to System Settings > Privacy & Security and click through Camera, Microphone, and Screen & System Audio Recording. You'll see every app that has access and can turn off anything that doesn't need it.

A few habits worth building into your Friday routine:

✅ Write down your top three priorities for Monday before you close out
✅ Clear your inbox to a manageable state rather than leaving it open-ended
✅ Block focused time on Monday morning before the day fills up
✅ Set a firm end time on Friday, and treat it like any other commitment

A calmer Monday usually starts with a more intentional Friday.

If your inbox has 8,000 unread emails, we’re not judging.

But here’s a 5-minute fix:

✔ Use “Rules” in Outlook or Gmail
(Automatically sort newsletters into folders.)
✔ Use “Unsubscribe” (yes, it works).
✔ Block 2 daily email check times instead of reacting constantly.

This should help cut down on some of the noise to help you focus on what is most important.
