NTest Fiber Monitoring OTDR technology identifies fiber faults and their position in the network.

A Remote Fiber Test System (RFTS) utilizing optical time-domain-reflectometer (OTDR) technology is a well-known tool for monitoring and troubleshooting optical fibers in cabled optical networks. The fault data can then be correlated with the Geographical Information System (GIS) to isolate the fault and pin point the problem location on a map. Once a network is in operation, a carrier can permanen

tly place a remote OTDR in a rack mount configuration at a centralized location, which can be programmed to routinely test critical fibers to quickly locate fiber failures, detect network intrusions as well as predict fibers that are degrading and likely to fail.

How many RTUs and users can the FiberWatch server support?

FiberWatch can support an unlimited number of RTU's and users. In operation today, we have accounts that are monitoring several hundred NTest devices. While it is common for most of our competitors to charge operators license fees for any users over 5, we want to keep this simple and cost effective for our customers. We have one customer with locations throughout Latin America that has installed RTU's in over 14 countries and they only need one license to cover all of these locations and users. We consistently have received feedback that this is a key reason why FiberWatch was chosen over other competitive offerings.

How Often do the NTest OTDR's need to be calibrated?

The calibration time recommended by OTDR manufacturers is two years. However, in a RFTS, we are interested in changes relative to a reference trace. We recommend that reference traces are updated once a year. By following this practice, the need for calibration in a RFTS system goes away. We have customers that have operated the same RTU without calibrating the OTDR for many years.
