Looking Back
🎬 FINDING GRASSMAN — Looking Back at My First Film
Before IDS Entertainment became what it is today, before all the conventions, projects, and everything else that came after, there was Finding GrassMan.
This movie will always hold a special place in my heart because it was my first film. It wasn’t made with a Hollywood budget. We didn’t have a massive crew, endless resources, or all the equipment that filmmakers have access to today. What we did have was an idea, a camera, a group of people who believed in it, and the determination to actually make a movie.
Finding GrassMan takes the legend of the Ohio Grassman and turns it into a horror story about Paul, a man who has spent years searching for the creature he believes killed his father. When people begin disappearing, that search becomes something much more dangerous.
Looking back at the trailer now, I can see every bit of where I was as a filmmaker at that time. I can see the things I would do differently today. I can see the rough edges. But I can also see something that I don’t think you can teach someone in film school:
The determination to finish the damn movie.
That’s what makes this trailer special to me.
It represents the beginning.
Every filmmaker has that one project where they learn what it really means to take an idea out of their head and put it on a screen. Finding GrassMan was that movie for me.
It wasn’t perfect—and I don’t pretend it was.
But it was ours.
We made it. We finished it. We put it out into the world.
And years later, I can still watch that trailer and remember the people, the locations, the long days, the problems we had to overcome, and the excitement of realizing that we were actually making a movie.
That’s something I’ll never forget.
So here’s my honest review of Finding GrassMan:
It’s not just my first film. It’s the film that proved to me I could make one.
And for that reason alone, it’ll always be one of the most important movies I’ve ever been involved with.
🎬 Finding GrassMan — 2018
My first film.
My first monster.
My first real step into filmmaking.
And after all these years…
I’m still proud that we went into the woods looking for the Grassman.
