So you've decided to run a test to check your internet speeds. But what do all of those terms in your speed test actually mean? Let NETEO crack open our tech dictionary to help you decipher it.

1. Mbps: Mbps, or Megabits per second, measures how fast your data moves. It’s the rate at which your internet is capable of downloading and uploading info. A higher Mbps means faster downloads and uploads, improved streaming, and a better online experience.

2. Download: Your download speed is how fast you can pull data from the server to your computer. The majority of online activity, such as loading web pages or streaming videos, consists of downloads. So download speed is much faster than upload speed. It is measured in megabits per second (Mbps).

3. Upload: The upload speed is how fast your computer sends data from you to others. Examples of activities that rely on uploading are: sending big files via email or using an app like Zoom or Google Meet to talk to someone else online. Upload speed is measured in megabits per second (Mbps) and will be slower than your download speed.

4. Ping: A ping is the time it takes for data to leave your computer, to reach a destination, and to return to your computer. Basically, how fast you get a response after you've sent out a request. The faster the ping, the more responsive the connection.

Note: The best way to get a reliable speed test is to hard wire your router and to make sure to pause or limit any other internet traffic to eliminate potential interference. Then run the test three times, waiting at least a minute between tests.
