It's 10 p.m., and another Gala is in the books.

To the guests, it looked like a smooth, polished evening. For the team, it marked the end of a process that started months ago and culminated in a day that began at 8 a.m. The attendees are gone, the lights are dimmed, but there are still chairs to stack, banners to roll, and boxes to haul. That part doesn't make the highlight reel, but it's just as much the gala as the speeches on stage.

Pick a Date (Easier Said Than Done)

The first challenge is always setting the date. On paper, it sounds simple. In practice, it's more like playing Tetris, where the right block only falls after a lot of twists and turns. Eventually, the pieces fit, the date is set, and the countdown begins.

Calls, Creativity, and Controlled Chaos

With the date locked in, the Teams calls start. At first, it's just a handful of us. Then more... and more. By the end, the calls become a mini event: someone can't make it, the internet freezes, someone forgets to unmute, and at least one dog is barking in the background (usually mine). Herding cats is likely easier, but week by week, the calls become more focused and productive.

Then the creative side kicks in. The Save the Date goes out first, deceptively simple for the effort behind it. Then come the website, promotional materials, banners, programs, and video production, a story unto itself. By the time the final cuts are done, we can recite them by heart. And still, someone asks for one last-minute edit.

Meanwhile, logistics pile up quietly. Auction items are gathered and displayed so they look like treasures. The seating chart becomes a puzzle where every move creates three new problems. Not glamorous, but without it, there's no event to attend.

Reality Gets in the Way

The room never feels quite the same twice. The stage is too big, then too small. Auction items that looked fine in a spreadsheet need rearranging. A table suddenly blocks the flow. A banner tilts just enough to drive the detail-oriented among us crazy. Sometimes it's stressful, but it's always satisfying when everything clicks into place.

The Illusion of Effortlessness

Doors open at 5 p.m. To guests, it's seamless. Behind the scenes, the team is whispering cues and making quiet fixes that hopefully go unnoticed. If the audience never sees the adjustments, that's the measure of success.

By the time the last banner is rolled and the chairs are stacked, it's been a thirteen-hour day layered on months of work. Guests leave remembering the camaraderie and polish. The team leaves tired, proud, and already thinking about next year. A gala isn't just one night.

Stressful? Absolutely. Humorous? More often than you would think. Worth it? Every single time.

The 2026 primary season just handed government affairs professionals a masterclass in political risk — and the tuition was paid by three powerful Republican incumbents.

Bill Cassidy. Thomas Massie. John Cornyn. Between them: decades of congressional experience, coveted committee assignments, and deep donor networks. All three lost to Trump-backed challengers this month.

The takeaway isn't about party politics. It's about strategic risk.

When incumbents become vulnerable, every relationship built around them becomes fragile. The professionals who will thrive in this environment aren't the ones with the deepest ties to any single champion — they're the ones who've built wide networks, stayed current on shifting political winds, and can reframe their message for the moment.

Three losses. One lesson: institutional stability is no longer a strategy.

We see it every week.

Another company layoff. Another think piece about AI and the future of work. Another organization asking employees to adapt to a new structure, new expectations, or simply "do more with less."

As Mental Health Awareness Month comes to a close, it's a reminder that employee well-being and organizational transformation are deeply connected. How leaders communicate during change directly impacts trust, morale, engagement, and culture.

A few things organizations can't afford to overlook:
– Managers need support too. Leaders are often carrying difficult messages while navigating uncertainty themselves.
– Silence creates anxiety. Clear, transparent communication is an act of leadership.
– Change fatigue is real. Employees are being asked to adapt while still delivering results.
– The work doesn't end at the announcement. Compassionate communication during workforce transitions is an ongoing commitment, not a one-time message.

bmgstrategies helps organizations navigate change with communications strategies grounded in clarity, empathy, and engagement. It's never too early — or too late — to get the communications strategy right. Let's talk.

Opening a new manufacturing facility can power your company’s growth — but can your proposed locations power your facility? Utilities are a core input into the site selection process, and it’s crucial to define your needs with as much precision as possible.

A few key considerations:

Understand your requirements. Establish projected power, water, wastewater, gas, and other utility needs — the earlier, the better.

Understand the timeline. Knowing the anticipated ramp-up schedule will make it easier for utility providers to provide clear assessments.
Engage early. Utility providers need sufficient time to assess whether short- and long-term capacity needs can be met and whether infrastructure upgrades will be required.

bmgstrategies can help guide your company through every step of the site selection process. Reach out to start the conversation.

Your Agency Isn’t an Org Chart. It’s a Band.

The lights drop. The crowd leans forward. Then the band walks on stage.

For the audience, the performance feels effortless—music flowing, energy building, each musician knowing exactly when to step forward or pull back. But anyone who’s played in a band knows that ease is earned through rehearsal, timing, listening, and trust. Agencies work the same way.

Most agencies describe themselves through org charts: tidy boxes connected by neat lines. But real work rarely moves that way. Ideas ignore reporting structures. Problems get solved by whoever sees them first. And when the work is truly great, the organization feels less like a hierarchy and more like a band.

Leadership sets the vision, like a front person carrying the energy outward. Operations keep the show running behind the scenes. Project leads become the vocalists, translating ideas into something clients can believe in. Writers shape the song itself, turning strategy into narrative. Creative directors are producers, helping the band find its sound and pushing the work toward something memorable. Designers bring emotion and resonance. Project managers hold the rhythm steady, guiding momentum and transitions. Research tunes the instruments before the performance begins. In the end, clients don’t remember the org chart. They remember the performance—whether the work felt cohesive, whether the story resonated, whether the team sounded like individuals or something unified.

Some bands just play the show. The best ones earn the encore.

New maps. New players. New risks.

In late April, Virginia voters approved a new Congressional map that gives Democrats an advantage in four GOP-held districts. It’s the latest in a broader redistricting wave, throwing the midterms into uncertainty—with even bigger implications for those on the ground.

Three things to watch:
1. Check your footprint: Are your headquarters, offices, or manufacturing sites being redistricted for the 2027 Congressional session? Now is the time to find out who is running in the new district so you can be first through the door to build a relationship with a new site representative.
2. Know your committees: Could redistricting cost you a key advocate on a Congressional Committee? Start expanding relationships now to protect your access.
3. Follow the votes: New maps = less predictable outcomes, even in districts not intended to cause a flip. Stay close to results.

bmgstrategies knows the value of strong relationships with site representatives – they are your first line of advocacy, and with the right expertise, they can be your best advocates. Want to learn more? Let’s talk.

Bringing our remote team together from across the U.S. made this year’s retreat especially meaningful. Time spent face to face strengthened relationships, sparked new ideas, and created plenty of laughter, while reminding us how valuable in-person connection can be.

From engaging sessions and team-building moments to inspiring speakers and thoughtful conversations, every part of the retreat reinforced what makes our team strong. We were also proud to continue growing our bmgCares program, creating even more opportunities to give back and support our local communities. We’re heading home with fresh perspectives, stronger connections, renewed energy, and full hearts. We’re excited for what’s and ahead and already looking forward to next year.
