: The iconic witch hat has one of the strangest origin stories in fashion history and it has almost nothing to do with witches. 🎩🧙‍♀️

The tall pointed black hat has been traced back to at least three completely unrelated groups. Medieval European tax collectors wore them to stay visible in crowds, Quaker women wore a similar style as a symbol of modesty and Welsh farmers wore pointed hats purely to keep the rain off.

Somewhere along the way, as folklore about witches spread across Europe, artists began illustrating them in the most recognizable headwear of the era. The pointed hat stuck and by the time Halloween went mainstream in America, the silhouette was already iconic.

One hat. Three origin stories. Zero actual witches. 😄

It’s and Halloween is three days away. 🎃

This is the window most business owners underestimate. Not the night of — you’ll be in the middle of it before you know it. Right now, while there’s still time to actually do something about it.

Pull your inventory and make sure you’re stocked for a high volume night. Confirm your themed specials are built into the system and tested, brief your team on what’s running, what’s not, and what the floor is going to look like Thursday night. Lastly, check that every terminal is working exactly the way it should before the costumes show up.

Three days feels like plenty of time. It goes faster than you think and the businesses that walk into Halloween night prepared are the ones that walk out of it with their best fall revenue and a team that isn’t completely burned out by midnight.

Most businesses collect it for a text receipt and never think about it again. The number goes into the system, the receipt goes out, and that’s the end of the relationship until the customer decides to come back on their own.

Here’s what that number is actually worth during the holiday season.
A well-timed text message - a holiday promotion, a gift card reminder, an exclusive offer for returning customers - has an open rate of over 90%. Not 20% like email or 3% like a social media post that the algorithm may or may not show.

The customers who have already walked through your door and trusted you with their number are your warmest audience. They know you and they’ve spent money with you. A single well-placed text between now and December 25th could bring them back in and bring someone with them.

: The haunted house was invented by a civic organization trying to keep teenagers out of trouble on Halloween. 🎃

In the 1930s, the Junior Chamber of Commerce started hosting organized haunted attractions as a way to give young people something structured to do on October 31st instead of the property damage and pranks that had become a Halloween tradition in a lot of American towns.

It worked, communities loved it and the concept spread. What started as a public safety measure quietly became a seasonal entertainment staple and eventually a $600 million industry that turns October into one of the most economically active months of the year for local businesses.

Not bad for an idea that started with a bunch of civic volunteers trying to keep kids off their lawns. 😄
