Shop life: a true rainbow roll! Typically, a press inked to print a background with more than one color is called a split-fountain or rainbow roll.

For this print run, Michaela used a shortened worm gear (created by designer-printer Cory) to squeeze in six colors of the rainbow. When the press is on and in use, the big top roller oscillates (or moves back and forth) to maintain an even layer of ink across all the rollers.

This limited oscillation makes it possible to print multiple colors at once, rather than losing colors that would otherwise blend. Essentially, shortened worm gear means your reds and yellows stay red and yellow instead of blending into orange.

We spend a lot of time thinking about ink, mixing ink, and working with ink, and we do enjoy using all the colors whenever we want, and sometimes all at once!

SUMMER and VACATION—two words that go so well together. If you’re adventure-bound and headed out to make unforgettable memories, have you chosen a go-to souvenir to collect along the way? We’re fond of badges of any kind, so we’ve designed an awesome array of waterproof stickers, pins, and patches inspired by the blocks we see and work with every day in the print shop.

We started with original materials made in the shop—vintage advertisements that used to appear on roadside billboards across the South—and added some recently carved printing blocks, wood type, and more, to create pieces that we rep our own water bottles, backpacks, and aprons.

Happy 92nd Anniversary to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park!

With over 522,000 acres of parkland to explore, mountains to climb, waterfalls to visit, plants and animals to meet, and more, it is the most visited park in National Park System. All that beautiful nature cannot be fully captured, but we have tried, pairing it with a bit of song lyric from fellow national treasures Felice and Boudleaux Bryant.

Tennesseans and North Carolinians may have a particular affinity for this print since these two states share this beautiful parkland, but no matter where you are, may you be home sweet home. Get out there and explore your corner of the world!

Shop life: in the shared work areas, such as the printing presses, when someone is working on something that should not be moved, we put a little sign on it that simply says “Live.” It conveys an active working area, and the designer-printer will be back soon to print, or in this case, to use the same palette of ink they were working with recently.

This array of ink will be appearing on large-format prints coming to our gift shop this summer. Hand-inked goodness alert!

New workshop alert! Try something a bit different in July: go bananas with us! For this workshop, we’ll roll out the fabric, ink, and a cart full of printing blocks so participants can design and print their own bandana (or one for their favorite four-legged friend)!

Our expert educators will guide participants through the process. During the week, Hatch Show Print’s hand-carved printing blocks are put to work by the shop’s designer-printers who incorporate them into the hundreds of show and event posters that come out of the shop each year. On the weekend, for special activities such as this workshop, some of the blocks are used by workshop attendees to make one-of-a-kind creations or extra special souvenirs of time spent in Nashville.

From perusing the blocks, sketching an idea or two, laying out the design, printing it on paper, to completing the finished project on fabric, our educators will be by your side to offer guidance, suggestions, and can-do support. And, if time allows, you may even be able to squeeze in carving your own small, simple printing block to incorporate into the bandana design. That, too, becomes a keepsake to take with you!

It seems like many of the prints and posters we make are even more fun to look at in conversation with fellow framed neighbors.

Perhaps that’s because, like fellow inkyheart shares on Instagram, we too LOVE LOVE LOVE seeing what other folks are making, and what you find inspiring enough to hang in the places you live and work every day. We are happy to see a couple of our posters hanging among so much color and light and in a “creative kitchen” where ink is applied to paper quite regularly.

How do you hang prints from our shop or live with some of the other fun pieces we get to design (like pillows and tea towels)? We want to see! So tag us when you post what you love on Instagram!
