Whether at home or in your place of business, getting people connected to your WiFi network shouldn't be such a hassle. The WiFi Porter by makes it so easy to get people connected to your network without having to share or type in your password. On one side, the NFC chip allows quick tap-to-connect access for Android phones or newer iPhone's. On the back, a customizable QR-code printout allows older iPhone's to connect using its camera app to scan. The whole process is incredibly seamless & simple, as connecting to WiFi should be. ⠀

Cable management is a big key to a de-cluttered tech life. I always try to connect devices via ethernet when possible, but running a 30+ ft cable can get messy. I used a CordMate kit to neatly run my cables along the wall from the existing ethernet jack and into an ethernet switch attached to the back of my entertainment center with velcro. This gave me strong ethernet connectivity to my TV, Xbox and extra ports for other devices in the future. It's a clean, simple way to extend ethernet capabilities throughout the house without having messy cables everywhere. ⠀ ⠀ https://ift.tt/2SnpUyE

HD Homerun Connect Quatro + Mohu Curve 50 HD Indoor Antenna
Cutting the cord has become more popular than ever, and that doesn't always mean adding a subscription or streaming service. If you primarily need local channels, an HD Antenna might be your best bet. This HD Homerun box allows your simple HD antenna to stream on all your devices - phone, computer, or streaming device. This specific model has 4 tuners, so you can stream on 4 devices at the same time. There is also a cheaper 2 tuner device that works equally as well. The HD local channels you get from your antenna are FREE! So there are no monthly fees. I've had a great experience with the HD Homerun box and this Mohu Curve HD antenna with a 50 mile range. It all ties in very nicely to my TV watching ecosystem.

Do you use a home security system to protect your house?

Whole home security is one of the most important aspects of having peace of mind and safety - as well as building a smart home. I've been using the Nest Secure system for about a year and have been very pleased. It's a great modular system that can adapt to any household and circumstance, allowing for easy expansion of future devices. Having an ecosystem of integrated devices is so important, and this system does a great job executing that.

A smart thermostat was the first smart device I had in my home, and has some of the the biggest real-world impact on your day-to-day lives. The Nest smart thermostat is a very simple, clean looking device that largely works without much user input. It learns your temperature habits over time and eventually, you won't have to adjust your home temperature much at all. It uses on-device motion sensors and phone location for its Home/Away mode, which really helps automate your heating/cooling when you're away from your home. While the Nest thermostat is probably the best option for those looking to be in the Nest/Google ecosystem, companies like Ecobee & Honeybee make great smart thermostats that often have more on-device features. Whichever device you choose, the ability to automate the temperature in your home is a major plus for comfortable living. https://ift.tt/2VqxtF9

Media consumption is higher today than it has ever been, and having a quality streaming device is the best way to bring all the streaming apps you need to your TV. While some TVs are "smart", the user interface on many is still far too slow and confusing. A streaming box or dongle tends to have a much better user experience and broader availability of apps. I use a variety of devices throughout my house, but I have to say I'm very fond of the TV 4K. Its interface is clean and easy to understand, although the remote could use some work. But it's powerful and like most Apple devices, seems to "just work". is by far the cheapest, but its lack of remote turns some people off. Amazon's devices are heavily linked to the ecosystem, perhaps more than any other device. No single device is perfect for everyone and every situation. There's definitely a level of app/service ecosystem built-in to each, but all still provide the major apps and services you'd expect. All these are a great, simple way to turn an old, "dumb" TV into a smart, connected device - and a must have for cordcutters!

If you've been interested in entering the home automation world but aren't sure where to start, smart outlets can be one of the easiest (and cheapest) ways to get started. This WeMo Mini Smart Plug is one of 2 models I use in my home and it does just what you'd expect: turns the device plugged into it on and off. When paired with an entry level smart assistant, like a Google Home Mini or Echo Dot, you can really get a taste of what home automation is capable of. I have 2 of these plugged into lamps and 1 in a TV. I also use the Kasa Smart Plug by TP-Link. It's a slightly cheaper option with great features. Both of these devices work seamlessly with Google Assistant and Alexa & allow for scheduling and remote access.

Not all smart devices have to be flashy with tons of features. These Amazon Dash Buttons have only one function, but are highly useful. They are essentially WiFi enabled buttons that order a specific item from the brands shown on the button. Say you notice you're low on paper towels, just hit the Bounty button and your pre-determined type of paper towels will be there in 2 days. They are definitely designed to make it easier for customers to continue buying from specific brands, but they do offer buttons from a wide variety of companies. The buttons are also essentially free, as they cost $5 up front and give you a $5 credit when you use them for the first time. The adhesive on the back makes them easy to place and access when you need them. For Amazon Prime members, they're a no-brainer.

In 2019, nearly every device is connected to the internet. Your home WiFi provides a vital infrastructure for all of your devices, but old routers aren't designed to handle the range and number of devices we use today. Mesh WiFi routers have changed consumer home networking and are ready for a modern smart home with countless connected devices. I've been using the Eero mesh system for a couple of years and have installed multiple Netgear Orbi systems and they're easily my 2 favorite available. The concept is the same - you get 2-3 (or more) routers in a set and place them throughout your house to blanket it in WiFi. Various sets are rated for different size houses, but there are options out there for everyone. Having a strong WiFi network is more important these days than ever, and these mesh systems are the best at removing the stress of traditional routers.

Video doorbells are one of the best places to start your smart home or outdoor security. The front door is a primary point of entry and a place that provides great peace of mind to be able to monitor. There have been a lot of great devices enter this market over the past couple of years, but I've been using the doorbell for about a year and really love it. Aside from being able to see my entryway, it provides facial recognition that works with the Google Home integration to notify you who is at your door. It also has great pre-recorded messages for reply's when you can't answer. This doorbell must be powered by existing doorbell wiring, so if that's not available there are other great options out there, such as the Ring Video Doorbell. Installation for either device is not difficult, but be sure to read the instructions when dealing with electrical wires.
