Rebuilding the Technician Pipeline

The automotive industry is evolving faster than the systems designed to train and support the people who keep vehicles on the road. EV platforms, advanced diagnostics and software driven repairs demand a new kind of technician, but most training and certification models are still built for a past generation.

Aaron Murray had a conversation with David Macholz from highlighted why the technician career pipeline is breaking. Students earn certificates without proving real skills. Employers expect competence that was never validated. New technicians face low pay, tool costs and unclear growth paths. The result is not a talent shortage. It’s a career crisis.

Macholz makes one point very clear. The industry must shift from content heavy education to performance focused development. Technicians need clear pathways, modern learning tools and access to service information that is easy to find and use.

This is where technical communication plays a critical role. Better documentation, improved search, short form video and AI supported tools can directly improve safety, retention and technician success.

Technology has moved forward. Training and communication need to move with it.

Bobcat safety training CONEXPO-CON/AGG

Conexpo 2026

The Griswolds went to Vegas. We’re heading to CONEXPO.

Shu and Adam couldn’t resist putting a twist on a classic Vegas Vacation moment. A little chaos. A lot of laughs. And one more hat.

Because if you work in this industry, you know it’s never just one role. It’s documentation. Training. Safety. Customer education. Some days it feels like you’re juggling it all just to keep things moving.

If your job has ever felt like surviving Vegas with the Griswolds, this one’s for you.

If you’re headed to CONEXPO, let’s connect. We’ll be there talking documentation, training, safety, and all the behind-the-scenes work that keeps customers up and running.

We’re heading to , and Shu recreated a classic “hallucination” scene, except in our version it’s not bats. It’s excavators. Everywhere.

Because once you’ve been around enough iron, every shadow looks like another machine you need to go film, learn, or explain.

Bonus points if you can name the movie we’re referencing.

And yes: “As your lawyer, I am taking you to CONEXPO.”

See you in Vegas.

We’ve got 10 people… but we need one more.
Shu and Aaron couldn’t resist putting a CONEXPO-CON/AGG twist on an Ocean’s Eleven style moment, except instead of recruiting one more person, we’re recruiting one more hat.
If you’ve ever felt like your job requires wearing multiple hats, you’ll understand this one immediately.
If you’re headed to CONEXPO, let’s connect. We’ll be there talking documentation, training, safety, and all the behind-the-scenes work that keeps customers moving.

Cards just landed, and Shu and Aaron decided to have a little fun with the famous American Psycho scene.

Yes, we reenacted the scene.
Yes, we took the paper stock way too seriously.
And yes, we absolutely judged kerning like our reputations depended on it.

But jokes aside, there’s a real point here: in technical communication and safety content, the details are not “extra.” They are the product. Clarity, consistency, and quality all show up in the small choices, whether it’s a manual, a training module, or… a business card.

If you’re headed to CONEXPO, we’ll be there and would love to connect, especially with folks working in documentation, training, safety, and product support.

Also, if you follow Tech Comm News or you’re involved with AEM work, let’s compare notes. There’s a lot happening in our space right now, and the best conversations always start face-to-face.

See you at CONEXPO.
