State of European Tech 2024: A decade of progress and the road ahead.
A special 10th anniversary edition of the State of European Tech report, produced by Atomico with key data contributions from Invest Europe, celebrates a decade of remarkable growth and resilience in European technology. The report details the ecosystem's transformation, its global potential, and the hurdles to overcome for sustained success.

Since 2015, European tech companies have raised a cumulative $426 billion, ten times the amount raised in the previous decade. The report, compiled by Atomico with Invest Europe and other data partners, projects European tech investment to reach $45 billion in 2024, comparable to the $47 billion secured last year.

The report highlights:

European tech has grown rapidly over the past decade, with a world-leading early-stage startup ecosystem. Challenges remain in unlocking growth-stage funding. European tech could be worth $8 trillion ten years from now, employing a world-class talent pool of 20 million people.

In our research in the field and dozens of interviews with managers, we have seen how Gen AI can be a catalyst for transforming traditional innovation workflows. 'The EU has a scaleup financing gap. Europe is not short of innovative companies, but those that want to grow face serious difficulties in accessing capital at home. Typically, venture capital (VC) firms provide capital to risky startups. But compared to other jurisdictions, Europe’s VC sector consists of fewer and smaller funds, because institutional investors in the EU rarely invest in VC or prefer established funds in the US. This constitutes a problem, especially for larger European scaleups that often relocate to the US where a vibrant and innovative finance ecosystem provides ample risk capital to new companies."

"It has been long established that the global hub for venture capital (VC) investments is the US, with California, New York and Massachusetts being particularly strong in this type of alternative investment. Europe, on the other hand, is notorious for lagging in the scene, with tight regulations, limited funding, and a stark contrast in performance to its counterpart over the Atlantic and even China on the other side of the continent. European VC has experienced positive development lately, but the growth is still stunted, and much of the framework in place must be revisited if EU is to ensure a bright economic future for its citizens. While there have been significant jumps in recent years, in particular in the defence tech sector, the general trend is not clear-cut."
