POV: day 1 at your first design job 🤣😜

Day 1. New job. Full of confidence. Opens design tool like they know exactly what they’re doing… and then just sits there.

For hours. The blank canvas hitting different when there’s an actual deadline attached to it. 😭 So they do what any self-respecting designer does, Googles “how to be creative” and prays. 🙏

No one warns you that half of design is just having an existential crisis in front of a white screen.

The lie nobody talks about in sprint planning.

We’ve been sold a story, ship faster, win bigger. Move fast, break things. Two-week cycles, daily standups, velocity charts climbing. And somehow, in all that momentum, we forgot to ask: faster toward what, exactly?

Speed without direction is just expensive chaos. The best products weren’t rushed, they were right. They were built by teams that paused long enough to question the assumption, kill the feature, and choose simplicity over the roadmap.

The real flex isn’t shipping fast. It’s knowing what not to ship.
Next time someone pushes for a faster timeline, ask them what problem we’re actually solving, and whether adding two weeks would change the answer.

Design is thinking. Thinking takes time. Protect it.

Your portfolio gets you in the room. Your skills keep you there.

Most people obsess over making their portfolio look perfect, the case studies, the mockups, the presentation. And yes, it matters. But here’s the truth nobody talks about: a stunning portfolio with weak skills has a very short shelf life.

Skills compound. Every project makes you faster, sharper, more confident. Your portfolio is just the highlight reel, it shows what you’ve done. Your skills show what you can do next. That’s what clients and employers are actually betting on.

So if you’re early in your career, stop waiting until your portfolio is “ready.” Start building in public. Document your process. Show your thinking. The portfolio will catch up, but only if the skills are growing underneath it.

Invest in the root, not just the fruit. 🌱
