A powerful and deeply human story about the women of Kabul in the years after the Taliban’s return—soldiers, journalists, mothers, daughters—each fighting in her own way to hold onto the life she built.

I’ve had the privilege of designing several covers for whose novels always center Afghan women with such care and tenderness. Her stories are unforgettable.

For this cover, I was inspired by the deep ultramarine of lapis lazuli, long associated with Afghanistan, and the golden landscape surrounding Kabul. A city resting between mountains. A place full of history, resilience, and beauty.
