Earlier this year, dozens of Minecraft-like mobile games downloaded by tens of millions of users from Google Play contained covert adware, McAfee revealed.

A total of 38 games with titles like Block Box Master Diamond, Craft Monster Crazy Sword and Craft Rainbow Mini Builder, which were installed by at least 35 million users worldwide, were affected.

Detected by McAfee as Android/HiddenAds.BJL, the adware in question, loads ads in the background, hidden from the user, in order to generate revenue.

According to a recent Kaspersky survey, adware was back at the top of the rankings this year, coming in at 34.8%. The most widespread adware families in Q1 2023 were MobiDash (22.5%), HiddenAd (21.9%) and Adlo (12.4%).

60K+ Android Apps delivered adware undetected for months, according to reporting by Elizabeth Montalbano.

This campaign targeting mainly US users disguised malware in fake security software, game cracks, cheats, free Netflix, and other "modded" apps.
