Mushroom music 🍄☎️

There are two mushrooms in this shot, a few feet apart, with one clip on each of them. Which means whatever you’re hearing had to get from one to the other, and the only route between them runs underground.

That route is the actual organism. A mushroom isn’t the fungus. It’s the fruiting body, the part that pushes up out of the soil to release spores and then rots away. The living thing is the mycelium, a mat of threads running through the ground, and two caps this close together are usually the same one. So this isn’t a recording of a mushroom. It’s a recording of what’s between two of them.

It’s also why the biggest living thing on Earth isn’t a tree. There’s a fungus in eastern Oregon spread across about 2,400 acres, more than 2,000 years old, and almost all of it is underground where nobody has ever seen it.

Bougainvillea music 🌺🎶

A plant’s sound comes out of whatever it is actually dealing with. Heat, light, water, whatever is moving through it that day. So when you listen to a bougainvillea in full color, it’s worth knowing what it took to get there.

Bougainvillea blooms best under stress. It wants poor soil and long dry stretches between waterings. Give it rich soil and plenty of water and you get a big healthy green vine with almost no color on it. All that pink is a plant that has been running dry.

The plant isn’t making this sound out loud. Those clips on the leaves are reading small electrical changes moving through the bougainvillea, and PlantWave turns those changes into notes the moment they happen. Prickly pear music 🌵🌀

You’re hearing a prickly pear cactus playing musical instruments using a PlantWave device, and this one gets strange.

While it plays, look at the little tufts where the spines come out. Those fuzzy clusters have a name, glochids, and they’re the part of this plant you actually have to respect. Every one of them is a hair with barbs running down it, sitting so loose that brushing past is enough to take a few hundred with you.

The long spines you can see and pull out in a second. The glochids go into skin, break off, and stay. People come back from a walk in the desert thinking they got away clean and spend the next week finding them.

Croton music 🌿🎶

Look at the top of this plant against the bottom. Same plant, same roots, and two completely different colors.

People used to call this one Joseph’s coat, after the coat of many colors, and you can see why. What most folks don’t know is that a croton builds that color out of light. The leaves up in the crown take full Costa Rican sun all day and they run yellow and orange right along the veins. The ones lower down sit in the shade of the plant’s own canopy and stay deep green. Keep a croton somewhere dim and it will let the color go entirely and come back plain green. So that coat is a record of where the light landed.

Banana music 🍌🎶

You’re hearing a banana plant playing musical instruments using a PlantWave device.

That big pink shape is the banana heart. Each pink layer is a modified leaf called a bract, and they peel back one at a time. Under every one of them sits a row of small yellow flowers.

The ones you can see here are male. They make nectar, and that nectar pulls in pollinators, bats especially. The female flowers opened earlier, further down and closer to the plant, and they’re the reason there’s any fruit on this stalk at all.

Then look at the tips of those little green bananas. The dried brown crust on the end of each one is the flower it grew out of, still hanging on.

Bougainvillea music 🌺🎶

There is not one petal in this shot.

All that pink is leaves. Bracts, if you want the word for it, regular leaves that went paper thin and turned color so they could do the advertising. The actual flowers are the small white ones tucked in the middle, usually three at a time. Most people walk past a bougainvillea their whole life and never once look at the flower.

And those little white trumpets have no petals either. Bougainvillea belongs to the four o’clock family, which skipped petals altogether, so what you’re seeing there is sepals colored up and doing the job instead.

Same goes for what you’re hearing. We chose the instrument. The clips are reading small electrical changes moving through the plant, and when a note arrives and where it goes next, that part is the bougainvillea. Nothing composed, nothing looping.

Cholla cactus music 🌵🌀

In the desert, we recorded the bioelectric signals of a cholla cactus in bloom, and what came back sounds alien. White noise moving like wind, and one long chord underneath it, the kind that sits under a house track.

Now look at what’s glowing around that flower. Those spines are leaves. A cactus gave up flat leaves a long time ago and moved all its photosynthesis into the green stem, and the leaves went to needles. On a cholla they come in so dense they scatter the low sun into that halo and shade the stem underneath, so the plant is sitting in a pocket of shade it grew for itself.

That’s what’s playing the instruments. Not a track, not a loop. A spiny thing on the desert floor, doing this live.

Nobody wrote this song 🌺

In the garden, we recorded the bioelectric signals of a Peruvian Lily and let it play these sounds.

No one composed this. There’s no melody we picked, no loop running underneath. The plant’s own signals are moving a wild synth patch and a slow pad, and the music is whatever the flower is doing in that moment.

So it’s a song with no author. It won’t ever play the same way twice, because the plant never does.

Poppy music 🌸

Near Antelope Valley, we recorded the bioelectric signals of a poppy and let it play these sounds.

Poppies here open with the sun and close back up at night and on cloudy days, folding their thin petals in and reopening when the light returns. So the flower you’re hearing is one that keeps opening and closing with the sky.

We ran its signals into a bendy synth that slides between notes, so the sound leans and bends the way the petals do in the wind.

Nothing is pre-recorded. This is the poppy playing in real time.

Nopal cactus music 🌵

In Arizona, we recorded the bioelectric signals of a nopal cactus and let it play these sounds.

Here’s how PlantWave works. We clip two sensors to the plant and read the tiny electrical changes moving across it as it takes in light and water. Those changes get translated into notes in real time.

There are no loops. Nothing is pre-recorded. We’re not playing a track and pretending the plant made it. Every note you hear is coming from what this cactus is doing right now, out in the desert.

A nopal is built for that desert. It even does most of its breathing at night to save water in the heat, so there’s always something happening under the surface to listen to.
