Employers fixate on disengaged employees because disengagement is costly - amounting to $500B+ in annual domestic losses, turnover risk, and cultural drag. However, Gallup’s data over 25 years shows a remarkably stable (yet somewhat disturbing) pattern. Namely, roughly one-third of your employees are engaged while a staggering two-thirds are not. But chasing the chronically disengaged rarely, if ever, moves the needle.

The real danger?

Overinvesting in the disengaged while neglecting the people who ARE performing. When engaged employees feel underappreciated or invisible, they leave.

Dynamic leaders need to rebalance their focus to support their best people, recognize the contributors, and reinforce/replicate what is working. (And doing away with what doesn’t.)
