Building a Digital Monograph
A New Website for Sarah Stacke

We made it past 10 years, I always think that’s the sign of a good website. I made a site for Sarah using Koken in 2013. The CMS came to an end some time ago, but we managed to make the site last. Alistair Shepherd’s post helped.

We aimed to draw on the success of the first site with Sarah’s new custom website design & build. Guardian Egyptian with generous leading gives the text a literary, “published” feel. It aligns with the writer and researcher. An aggressive use of white space to ensure the photography and words remain the focal point.

There are writing projects laid out in a vertical, scroll-heavy format like an editorial photo essay: the narrative unfolds chronologically. There are photography portfolios that integrate text and images on the same plane. Reinforcing Sarah’s role as a “storyteller” and “researcher” in addition to being a visual artist. The context of the photo is as important as the photo itself.

Content-first: a bigflannel specialty. Designed for an audience that wants to look and read, not just click.

Reuben () posted to his Instagram that he needed a web designer, my good friend and client for over 20 years, Ted Morrison () recommended me. Thank you Ted!

This is one of Reuben's NFT's: Old Moons Meet New Earth II. I often pop it open on my desktop and turn the volume up high.

From Reuben: 'I needed a platform that could showcase the full scope of this interdisciplinary journey. What followed was twelve months of deep research and reflection. I took my time. I studied websites of photographers whose work I admire, wrestled with technical decisions between Squarespace and custom builds, and most importantly, asked myself fundamental questions: What do I want to show? How do I want to show it? How can I create something that honours my past while pointing toward the future?

My newfound collaboration with Mike Hartley of bigflannel was pivotal. He had the skills to translate what felt like a vast jumble of creative output into something refined and cohesive. More impressively, he had the patience to endure my perfectionist tendencies as I agonised over details down to the half-pixel level while slowly acquainting myself with the broad strokes of web design. If you’re considering a new website, I cannot recommend Mike enough.'

I just launched the new version of Movement Science Made Simple‘s website. It builds on the 2019 and 2016 versions we built together. The new site keeps visitors up to date with the school’s courses, when they are run as classes and where, and is also integrated with Teachable. We use the Teachable platform to manage all courses and classes, and to take payments, but it is particularly helpful for online courses & classes: live or on-demand. It’s MSMS’ Classroom.

Topsy Turvy features the work of Qiana Mestrich. The zine features two series, The Black Dolls and The White Dolls. Qiana was inspired by the “topsy turvy” cloth dolls, invented and handmade in the late 1800s by enslaved African-American women. The zine itself is topsy turvy with two covers and each series running to the zine’s center pages.

A new custom designed and built bigflannel website. This one is for Janette Beckman, Joe Conzo, and Martha Cooper. They are joining together to standardize the terms of use for their hip hop work and will refer people who want to use it to their terms and conditions on this site. The site design focuses on the terms and making an inquiry, folks see their images elsewhere.
