Happy International Women's Day!

At TWO-N we’re so proud to be a company that hires, promotes, mentors and supports women in technology.

We are proud to have strong female leaders within our studio.

Here’s how we’d like to make an impact in the data visualization field and what we love about it:

“My favorite part of being in the data viz field is working to solve new and interesting challenges for our clients and being a part of this community of innovators.”
- Natalie

“I hope to make an impact in my field by striving to be excellent, by visualizing things that matter to me and people like me and by paying it forward at every opportunity.”
- Jasmine

“I hope to make an impact in the data viz field by piquing curiosity. I love when our visualizations get people to ask questions like: What's going on here? Whom does that impact and what does it mean?"
- Angela

Feel free to weigh in: how would you like to make an impact in your field?

We are so grateful for our incredible project managers!

As you may already know, there are several different phases to a data visualization project.

And our project managers oversee the day-to-day progress: planning, executing and leading the team.

They also ensure that the project runs smoothly, efficiently and keep the team coordinated.

We wanted to take a moment to recognize their immense efforts and thank them here!

The Williams Institute is a national think tank, dedicated to conducting rigorous, independent research on s*xual orientation and gender identity law and public policy.

The Williams Institute produces high-quality research with real-world relevance and disseminates it to judges, legislators, policymakers, media and the public.

In December 2014, upon the release of their annual report on the disparities for LGBT people across the regions of the US, (“The LGBT Divide: A Data Portrait of LGBT People in the Midwestern, Mountain & Southern States”) we conceptualized, designed and developed a data visualization narrative to coincide with the report’s release.

This report reviews social climate, demographic, economic and health indicators, and highlights disparities between the 21 states that currently have non-discrimination laws that include s*xual orientation and the 29 states without these laws.

The report and visualization exhibit that 60% of LGBT Americans live in the South, Midwest and Mountain states, where they face a more challenging social climate and legal landscape and face greater disparities than non-LGBT people across economic and health indicators.

We’d love to hear from you in the comments section.

After you flip through the slides, let us know what you thought of the project.

What did you learn? 💭

At TWO-N we love to play with new technologies and innovative ways to experiment and visually display data.

Almost all of our projects have a discovery/exploratory phase where we come up with visual concepts. These concepts can be anything from a hand drawing, to an observable notebook to a webgl “data sketch.”

This phase in each project helps us to expand our knowledge and creativity while simultaneously helping us speak to our clients and find the visual elements, interactions and directions that resonate with them.

This is known as the “jelly galaxy.”

Pensions and Investments is an international money management newspaper, written for pension, portfolio and investment management executives.

Their Research Center is an interactive database of institutional investment data compiled and verified by the P&I editorial/research team.

It includes data on asset owners (i.e. pension funds, endowments, and foundations), money managers and investment consultants, providing subscribers with the ability to sort and filter the data as they desire.

We worked with the P&I team to create a strategic redesign of the Research Center, through design exploration, user interviews, and domain knowledge, while also developing interactive visualization elements that enable subscribers to view and manipulate data in an intuitive and user-friendly manner.

A few months ago, we shared photos of the Health Equity Tracker, an ambitious project that aims to give a detailed view of health outcomes by race, ethnicity, s*x, and other critical factors.

They’re “focused on equitable data” as “health equity can’t exist without equitable data.”

While the Covid-19 outbreak affected all segments of the population, evidence indicated that the effects were felt disproportionately by specific communities.

We were so proud to take part in this informative and interesting project, as their goal is to help policymakers understand what resources and support affected communities need, in order to be able to improve their outcomes.

We designed and implemented the visualization which reported the monthly Covid-19 cases per 100k people over time by race and ethnicity.

We shared the visualizations back in November and today we’re sharing the observable sketches associated with this project.

Do you enjoy seeing this type of preliminary content?

Please feel free to explore this project on the Health Equity Tracker website through the link in our stories today.

Today we’re starting a new feature to highlight the books that inspire us at TWO-N 📚

Each month we’ll share a few books that have impacted our lives as professionals in the data visualization field.

Up first we have:

“The End of Bias: A Beginning: How We Eliminate Unconscious Bias and Create a More Just World” by Jessica Nordell

And “Processing: A Programming Handbook for Visual Designers and Artists” by Casey Reas & Ben Fry

If we inspire you to read them, let us know what you think!

What books have inspired you in your field?

Read anything recently you’d recommend?

Feel free to share them in the comments section below 📖

With over 19 miles of shelves, West Point’s Jefferson Hall Library houses a million books.

And it’s easy to get lost in there.

Our flash-based ‘virtual library’ showcases the United States Military Academy’s extensive collection, while also helping guide cadets, teachers and visitors through the 148,000 square foot building, incorporating facts and photography about various rooms and sections of the library.

Take a look at what we did for them and let us know what you think about it.

Do you love getting lost in libraries like we do?

Earlier this month we shared the new initiative we started called the “I Heart NY Fund.”

January was “Museum Month,” and the TWO-N staff took to the streets and visited different museums in New York City.

Here’s a visual diary of their experiences and the memberships that they selected. Photos above from The Guggenheim & The Met.

Jasmine - Museum of Natural History
David - Museum of the Moving Image
Angela- MoMA
Monroe - Metropolitan Museum of Art
Natalie - The Guggenheim Museum
Ivy - The Film Forum & Hermann - MoMA

We’d love to hear from you in the comments.

Did you visit any museums recently?

Tell us about them!

Are you a tree lover? 🌲 🌳

We are! 💚

A few years ago we participated in New York City’s Data Through Design 2018 Exhibit.

For the exhibition we created a Manhattan Tree Topography Map 🗺️

It’s a celebration of New York City’s street tree population through a data-driven, wooden map.

The map is based on the NYC Street Tree Census data and showcased the diversity and volume of New York’s tree population.

Each neighborhood is represented through a wooden block in different height and material 🪵

The height signifies the amount of trees, whereas the wood represents the most prevalent tree.

The sculpture is interactive: by picking up blocks, the audience can uncover further information on NYC’s tree life and experience the haptic qualities of the wood.

We really enjoyed creating this special project and found it so interesting to learn about all the different trees in Manhattan.

Fun fact: one of our team members worked with the Million Trees Initiative and planted some of these trees! 🌱

Did you know that Manhattan had so many different types of trees?
