The Project of Extraction

Workshop 3
Course convened by Mitesh Dixit

“...a map [is] not a tracing...the map is entirely oriented toward an experimentation in contact with the real. The map does not reproduce an unconscious closed contact with the real; it constructs the unconscious. It fosters connections between fields, removal of blockages on bodies without organs.”
G. Deleuze and F. Guattari, A Thousand Plateaus: Capitalism and Schizophrenia (1980)

This workshop investigates the role of mapping in shaping and representing spatial realities, particularly in the context of extractive industries and urban growth. Traditionally, maps have been seen as neutral depictions of geography, but this course challenges that notion, asserting that maps actively construct reality by emphasizing certain features while excluding others.

Focusing on Bor, Serbia, a region shaped by copper mining since 1903, this course explores the profound impact of extraction on urban configurations, territorial boundaries, and social structures. It encourages students to develop technical and intellectual skills to critically examine these influences through the combined use of forensics, data analysis, and physical documentation. By employing digital and analog mapping techniques, students will learn to challenge traditional cartographic methodologies and generate new ways of visualizing and documenting the built environment.

Students will gain practical proficiency in GIS, 3D modeling, and data visualization tools through discussions, readings, and hands-on workshops. These methods will equip them to dissect the multifaceted impacts of mining on urban spaces, fostering a reimagined understanding of spatial representation beyond the ocularcentric and Cartesian frameworks.

Wednesday, March 8th, at SCAD - The University for Creative Careers / DOMAIN OFFICE's Mitesh Dixit will deliver the lecture "Transgressive Geographies: Beyond Territory".

Contextual positioning, whether situational or ideological, has always defined the relevance of architecture. Utilizing types of critique, analysis derived from Hermeneutics, traditional architectural techniques, and most critically the collapsing of multiple disciplines into a unified architectural method, Dixit’s lecture will attempt to develop a cohesive understanding of the built environment by broadening the concept of context. Through a series of projects which operate at multiple scales and mediums, will illustrate how design, geography, political science, and philosophy are integrated to identify and expose physical, economic, and sociopolitical situations.

Lecture will take place at SCAD Museum of Art at 17.00 EST and is open to the public.

DOMAIN OFFICE's Mitesh Dixit will deliver the lecture "Progressive Nothingness: The Argument Against Growth" on November 20th at the Dani arhitekture in Podgorica, Montenegro.

Dixit’s talk will provide a brief over view of the origins of capitalism, the concept of enclosure, and how growth became an imperative and architecture's complicit role. The central thesis argues that only way forward, i.e. stop the continued destruction of the planet - is to NOT grow and expand.

"Unbuilt historical architecture is preserved by museums and archives, circulated in a variety of media, and studied by a range of design fields, both academic and practical. Its enduring appeal arises from its dual existence as a document of historical actuality and a reservoir of unrealized potential."
