Your employees are already using AI. The question is whether you know how.

In conversations with firm leadership across industries, one pattern keeps surfacing: AI adoption has outpaced policy, governance, and oversight — often without anyone realizing it.

Client emails summarized. Contracts uploaded for analysis. Financial data processed externally. All of it well-intentioned. None of it sanctioned.

This isn't a future risk. It's a present one.

We put together a piece on how AI has become the new Shadow IT — why traditional controls don't catch it, why banning it doesn't work, and what a governance-first approach actually looks like.

If you're responsible for technology, risk, or compliance at your firm, this one's for you.

For years, firms believed Shadow IT was under control. Standardized systems. Locked-down devices. Approved applications. Centralized identity. It felt contained.Shadow IT has now returned, and this time it does not arrive as unauthorized software installed on a workstation. It arrives quietly, throu...

Your vendors are part of your infrastructure.

Which means their risks are yours too.

As organizations rely more on third-party platforms to run operations, vendor risk has moved from the IT department to the boardroom.

“Set it and forget it” IT is over.

In 2026, technology doesn’t sit still — and neither can your business.
In our latest article, The End of “Set It and Forget It” IT: Why Continuous

Optimization Is Now a Business Imperative, we break down:

✔️ How “IT drift” quietly increases cost and risk
✔️ Why cloud economics demand active oversight
✔️ The hidden productivity drain of tool sprawl and license creep
✔️ What continuous optimization actually looks like in practice

For small and mid-sized businesses, the question isn’t whether your systems are working. It’s whether they’re working efficiently, securely, and strategically.

At Roark Tech Services, we believe optimization isn’t maintenance, it’s a competitive advantage.

If you haven’t reviewed your environment in the last year, this is your sign.

There was a time not so long ago when businesses could deploy technology, confirm it worked, and move on. Servers were installed, software was licensed, networks were configured, and the prevailing assumption was that, barring a failure, the environment would continue serving the business indefinite...

Shadow IT is often framed as a user problem.

It isn’t.

When capable employees reach outside approved systems, they are usually trying to move the business forward. The real issue is that governance has failed to make the secure path the practical one.

Regulators, insurers, and investors increasingly understand this. Their questions are not about who downloaded an app. They are about visibility, identity control, and whether leadership truly knows how information moves through the organization.

That is a board-level concern, not a help desk issue.

Our latest piece explores why modern environments — especially those built around Microsoft 365 and rapidly adopted SaaS — require a new approach to accountability and oversight.

Shadow IT Is a Governance Failure, Not a User Problem

Please note that all Microsoft 365 services are restored.

On the afternoon of January 22, 2026, Microsoft experienced a significant service disruption that affected multiple Microsoft 365 workloads across North America.

The issue began at approximately 2:30 p.m. ET on January 22.

Users encountered intermittent access issues, authentication failures, delays in sending and receiving email, and elevated error messages such as “451 4.3.2 Temporary server error.” These symptoms were the result of Microsoft’s internal infrastructure issues and were not related to any tenant configuration or client environment.

This was a platform level Microsoft incident. Our Microsoft 365 tenant configuration and security posture were not contributing factors.

As part of our standard post incident practice, we are reviewing message queues, service health telemetry, and tenant status to confirm that all services have fully normalized.

If you experienced any lingering issues after service restoration, please let us know and we will investigate right away.

We will continue to monitor Microsoft’s formal post incident report and will share any additional relevant findings.

Sincerely,

Your Roark Tech Services Team

Private equity has reshaped the MSP industry—and not always for the better. What was once a landscape of founder-led firms and local specialists is now increasingly driven by roll-ups, standardized platforms, and margin optimization.

Scale looks impressive on paper. But when IT becomes a consolidation exercise, service quality, accountability, and security are often the first things to erode. What’s gained in efficiency is frequently lost in context, continuity, and ownership—exactly the things small and mid-sized businesses rely on when risk is real.
