You may soon have to assemble your own Peloton❗️

Coming on the heels of a third round of layoffs, Peloton is now considering redesigning its bikes so that users can assemble them independently. CEO Barry McCarthy is also considering a plan that would let Peloton app subscribers potentially view workouts on third-party workout machines. McCarthy told Bloomberg that Peloton has been working on a bike redesign “for a while” and, to top it all off, said he hopes Peloton’s long-awaited rower might debut sometime this holiday season. He also confirmed the company hasn’t fully given up on the Tread Plus.
All of this tracks with comments McCarthy made in May during the company’s Q3 2022 earnings. At the time, he floated the idea of potentially changing hardware designs so that in the future Peloton equipment would be designed to arrive at a customer’s home in one piece. Right now, Peloton’s treadmills and bikes require white-glove delivery in separate pieces, with a crew that comes to your home and builds yours for you. The service used to be free, but Peloton began charging an additional $250–$350 fee at the end of January.
The move is part of Peloton’s ongoing restructuring plan, which aims to reduce the company’s costs and improve cash flow. On Friday, Peloton announced it was cutting more than 500 jobs related to last-mile deliveries and product distribution. The company also noted it was raising the cost of its Bike Plus and Tread while shuttering retail locations in 2023. Making it so that customers can assemble their own equipment would mean the company can simply ship devices via FedEx — which is a move that rowing rival Hydrow recently implemented with its slimmer, smaller Hydrow Wave rower. Since taking over in February, McCarthy hasn’t shied away from sharing novel ideas on how to turn around Peloton’s flailing financial fortunes. Money saved from Friday’s cost-cutting measures will purportedly be funneled back into Peloton’s R&D as well as marketing efforts. That includes marketing Peloton’s standalone app, which McCarthy identified as historically receiving little to no promotion. That dovetails with other plans the CEO divulged to Bloomberg, including potentially allowing Peloton users to stream classes on third-party workout machines. McCarthy also noted the company may tweak the app’s subscription strategy toward a “freemium” model where some features aren’t locked behind a paywall.
That strategy is similar to what Apple currently does for its Fitness Plus service, which doesn’t require the use of an Apple-branded exercise machine. Instead, people can use their own devices to stream Fitness Plus classes while using rowers, treadmills, and bikes at their local gym. The main difference is that Apple still requires users to own a minimum of an Apple Watch and to access Fitness Plus.
But while McCarthy seems keen to pivot toward services, it seems like hardware still has a role to play in Peloton’s business. For instance, the company is gearing up to launch a rower, potentially this holiday season. The rower was perhaps the worst-kept secret in connected fitness until it was confirmed earlier this year at Peloton’s annual Homecoming event for subscribers.More surprisingly, McCarthy hinted that the company was hoping to relaunch the Tread Plus, which was recalled last year after causing several injuries and the death of a small child. While both its Tread and Tread Plus machines were recalled, the Tread was later approved for sale toward the end of 2021. The Tread Plus, however, remains out of circulation. In Q3, the company also noted that returns of the high-end treadmill were higher than anticipated, costing the company $18 million. According to McCarthy, relaunching the Tread Plus is entirely dependent on the government clearing it for sale. It’s possible that while Peloton hasn’t given up hope on the Tread Plus, it’s not something that it’s banking on either. On Friday, part of the rationale for hiking up the price of the “affordable” Tread by $800 was to position it as a superior device and boost Peloton’s “premium” image.
Another interesting tidbit is that Peloton may be preparing to expand its One Peloton Club leasing pilot. The program bundles together the cost of the bike and classes into a single $89 monthly fee. The pilot has thus far been successful for the company, with McCarthy saying in May that the program had “mass market appeal” as 53 percent of signups came from households with incomes under $100,000.
Peloton is expected to hold its Q4 2022 earnings call later this month on August 25th, and we’ll likely find out more about which plans will stick then. So far, Peloton’s restructuring efforts have been off to a slow start, and Wall Street investors have seemed skeptical overall.

HBO Max attempts to fix its notoriously buggy app with oft-requested features❗️

For years, HBO Max has been under fire for its buggy app. Today, the streaming service’s re-platformed app completed its global rollout on desktop, iOS, Android and Amazon.com Fire tablets. New features include a shuffle button on mobile, SharePlay support for iPhone and iPad users in the U.S., a dedicated home for downloaded content and more.
With the shuffle button now on mobile devices in addition to desktop and connected TV apps, users can randomize which episode to play for select series on the streaming service. U.S. subscribers with an ad-free subscription can use SharePlay on their or to watch HBO Max content in sync with friends or family while on FaceTime. Other updates include:
A dedicated home for downloaded content
Tablet support for both landscape and portrait orientations
Chromecast stability improvements
An updated screen reader experience with better navigation elements and functionality
The ability to split screens with other apps on devices that allow that
The company also said that it upgraded the navigation and is giving users a “refined design and visual styling to let content shine.”
“The changes give our users more of the features they care most about, along with improved navigation and a more immersive canvas for storytelling, helping them click play on their favorite content faster and with less friction,” Kamyar Keshmiri, SVP, Product Design, Warner Bros. Pictures Discovery Streaming, said in an official statement.
The revamped mobile and desktop apps mean that the company has finished updating apps across all platforms.
The changes began last fall when the company replaced connected TV apps with a new, “more performant tech stack.” In April, HBO Max launched an updated app for Apple TV users that aimed to bring stability and improved performance to the app. Roku, PlayStation, Android, Samsung, LG Global, VIZIO and more smart TV apps also use the new tech stack.
With a loss of 300,000 domestic subscribers in Q2, the company has a lot of work to do. Especially since its new streaming service is coming next year, merging Discovery+ and HBO Max content. So, while the new HBO Max app will be gone in 2023, this could help the company create a better successor app and improved experience for its combined subscribers.
Also, the new app comes just in time for the “Game of Thrones” prequel “The House of the Dragon,” premiering on August 21.

PlayStation's Slick New Hardware Is For Hardcore PC Gamers❗️

Last month Sony Interactive Entertainment announced a brand-new range of gaming gear which aimed squarely at PC players.
While this is clearly a move designed to bridge the gap between PlayStation and PC users, the company has now made it clear this hardware is for "hardcore PC gamers" all the way. It's clear to see that the new InZone range of PC gaming hardware, consisting of high-end desktop gaming monitors and headsets, means business. This is Sony's first attempt at flogging PC hardware since quietly doing away with the Vaio laptop back in 2014.
The InZone M9 monitor is king of this new range, packing 4K/27in IPS display and HDMI 2.1 connectivity. It's a PC gaming screen all the way, thanks to its 144Hz refresh rate, 1ms grey-to-grey response time, and compatibility with Nvidia G-Sync. There's also a cheaper 1080p sibling available in the InZone M5, which boasts a refresh rate of 240Hz.
If you're after a new headset, Sony is releasing a trio of made-for-PC kits. The InZone H9, InZone H7 and InZone H3 will all be available to order from July 4, with the best of the bunch (the H9) offering active noise cancellation, wireless connectivity, and synthetic leather earpads. A real premium experience.
In a recent interview with Nikkei, Sony executive deputy president Kazuo Kii said that INZONE said that InZone is the company's big push for the PC space.
He said: "InZone's target market is hardcore PC gamers. We're going to start at the top and learn what top esports gamers want. The vision we have in mind is that of Mizuno and Nike providing shoes for athletes. You can win prize money in esports. If a monitor's response time lags even slightly, you lose. Sony products aren't going to let people engaged in these grueling battles down."
Between this new line of hardware and all of the PlayStation games that have come to PC over the last few years, it's clear Sony is making a big play for the hearts of PC gamers. We'll have to see how it goes.

Microsoft will start banning players from all private Minecraft servers❗️

Since its initial release over a decade ago (and even following Microsoft's 2014 acquisition of developer Mojang), Minecraft has let players create private servers where they're in full control of what behaviors (and players) are allowed. Next week, though, is set to roll out a new update that lets it ban a Minecraft player from all online play, including private servers and those hosted on Microsoft's subscription-based Realms plan.
Earlier this week, Microsoft launched a pre-release version of Update 1.19.1 for the Java Edition of Minecraft, which will go live for everyone on Tuesday, June 28. That update will add the ability to report users who abuse the game's chat system and allow for "reported players [to be] be banned from online play and Realms after moderator review." On a recently updated "Why Have I been Banned from ?" help page, notes that banned players will also get a message when they "sign into Minecraft on any platform (non-Java Edition) [aka "Bedrock"]." That message will clarify that "banned players are not allowed to play on servers, join Realms, host or join multiplayer games, or use the marketplace. They are also not allowed to access Minecraft Earth. Xbox players will no longer have access to their worlds [emphasis added]."
Whose moderation is it, anyway?
While bans will limit players' ability to join private servers, Microsoft suggests that its "highly trained moderation staff is looking at the most egregious violations in public Featured Servers and Realms... Personal worlds will not be reviewed." Private server owners will also still be able to issue bans that apply to that server alone and which are "at the discretion of the server owner." Microsoft says it will "not intervene in private servers aside from overt violations of the EULA and our Terms of Service."
The help page also suggests that many moderation decisions will lead to temporary suspensions, while permanent bans will be reserved for "the most severe violations of our Community Standards." Those Community Standards cover common moderation topics like "hate speech, bullying, harassing, sexual solicitation, or threatening others" but also things like "excessive posting or spamming" in chat, creating "negative and disparaging" content, or posting personal information about "yourself or others."
A help page on player chat reporting lays out other moderation categories like "imminent harm - self-harm or su***de, terrorism or violent extremism, non-consensual intimate imagery, [and] drugs or alcohol." Other potential reporting categories like "'Profanity', 'Nudity or po*******hy', and 'Extreme violence or gore'" were recently removed in a new release candidate, according to the update notes.
The chat reporting help page also lays out that reports must be initiated by a player and will be reviewed by the moderation, which should hopefully limit the false-report problems sometimes associated with more automated moderation systems. warns that abusing the chat reporting system by knowingly sending incorrect or irrelevant moderation requests or inciting others to do the same "can lead to repercussions for your account." And banned players will be able to file for a case review if they feel they have been banned unjustly.
On social media, it's not hard to find players reacting negatively to the encroachment of Microsoft moderation decisions on their private game spaces. ", although family friendly, and primarily catered towards children, is a game played by many adults that desire private spaces where they may play the game in certain ways or communicate in certain ways that are inappropriate for younger audiences," writes Reddit user Phantom-Soldier-405. "By severely restricting the ability for adults to enjoy games in their way, Microsoft is not only losing popularity and profits in the long run, but also giving themselves an even worse reputation than they already have with handling games."
user quillka put it more bluntly: "Leave the player hosted servers alone! They have their own moderation and are capable of handling themselves. It has been this way for years and has worked for years."
Some players are also worried that the new reporting functions will be abused, despite 's stated protections. "I understand Mojang's intentions are likely good, but trolls *will* get people falsely banned and there'll likely be next to nothing they can do about it," one user wrote in response to the update announcement.
Public clearinghouse MinecraftServers.org currently lists more than 31,000 private online Minecraft servers, a number that likely represents just a fraction of the privately controlled servers out there.

Here's every iPhone widget coming to your lock screen in iOS 16❗️

Apple took the stage earlier this week at Apple Park in Cupertino, California for 2022. During the keynote address, Apple gave us the first look at iOS 16 and all of the new features coming to the iPhone this fall. While iOS 16 isn’t a complete overhaul, it does bring a new look to the lock screen.
Among the changes to the lock screen in 16 is the ability to add widgets, and MacRumors has a breakdown of every widget currently available.
iOS 16 lock screen widgets
As MacRumors notes, iOS 16 lets users place some widgets above the clock and others below the clock. Apple might add more widgets before or after the launch of iOS 16, but here are all of the iOS 16 lock screen widgets available in the first beta:
Above the clock
It’s possible to put some simple widgets above the clock on the lock screen next to the date. MacRumors says that most of these widgets display a single data point, using alphanumeric text and symbols to quickly share data with the user:
Calendar: Current date or upcoming events
Clock: Current time in your time zone or next alarm
Fitness: Activity stats including move calories, exercise minutes, and stand hours
Reminders: Next reminder
Stocks: One stock of your choice with an up or down symbol
Weather: Moon events, sun events, conditions, location, rain, air quality, UV index, or wind
These are nothing like the widgets you’re used to seeing on the home screen. They provide very little information, but if that’s all you need, they’ll be front and center on your lock screen at all times. Apple will undoubtedly add more in the future.
Below the clock
The space below the clock is far more substantial, which means the widgets are more substantial as well. You can place up to four square widgets, two rectangular widgets, or a combination of two square and a rectangle, depending on your needs:
Batteries: Shows the battery status of the iPhone or connected
Calendar: Can show the date and the next upcoming event
Clock: See the time in one city, a world clock for up to three cities, and the next alarm
Fitness: Small widget displays your Activity rings, while the large widget shows Activity stats
Home: Check on indoor climate sensors, lights and switches, and security alerts
News: Shows today’s top news story from Apple News
Reminders: Displays one of your lists from the Reminders app
Stocks: Small widget lets you see a single stock, while the large widget can display up to three
Weather: Moon events, sun events, conditions, location, rain, air quality, UV index, or wind, but only conditions and moon events are available as large widgets
MacRumors warns that Apple could add, remove, or change any of these widgets for the launch of 16 this fall. It’s also worth noting that third-party developers will be able to create widgets for their own apps using the WidgetKit .

iOS 16 introduces built-in duplicate detection for Photos❗️

Apple’s Photos app is gaining a lot of useful features in 16. While the star of the keynote was Shared Photo Library, Photos has also learned how to detect duplicates in your library, new ways to edit, and more.
Duplicate detection
Starting with iOS 16, the built-in Photos app can now detect duplicate photos and videos in your photo library. This feature is useful for both cleaning up your library and managing your library storage size. Duplicate detection is found here:
Photos app
Albums tab
Duplicates album under Utilities section
From here, you can view how many duplicate photos and videos have been detected. In my case, there are 17 photos and 6 videos. Each set of duplicates (or triplicates) is listed with an option to merge the photos or videos into a single item. You can merge select sets of duplicates or select all to merge all detected duplicates.
Apple says that merging maintains information like favorites, keywords, and captions, and the highest quality image or video is kept. Before now, separate utility apps were required to seek out duplicate photos and videos.
Edit updates
Want to apply the same edit to a bunch of photos? 16 can do that. The Photos app now lets you copy edits made to one photo and paste them onto another photo or a selection of photos.
Regret an edit you made several steps ago? Photos in iOS 16 can also undo and redo edits for more than one step. Previously, the best solution was reverting a photo to the unedited version before starting over.
More
Photos in iOS 16 also gains other features like locking Hidden and Recently Deleted behind a passcode, Touch ID, or Face ID. Users can also sort people alphabetically, restart videos in Memories, and turn off Memories and Featured Photos in the Photos widget.
iOS 16 is currently in developer beta. Public beta versions will go live in July, and the final release will be available to all customers later this fall.

Fitbit Watch Google Integration Gets Off The Ground With Assistant Support 😊😃😀

You can now ask Google Assistant to reel off stats from your Fitbit account, and your Google Fit profile. This is one of the few signs of Google- Fitbit integration seen since Fitbit was acquired by Google in January 2021.
It lets you ask Google Assistant from your phone, or a Nest smart speaker, for your resting heart rate or the number of steps you took, say, last week or yesterday.
To get this to work, head into the Settings menu on your Google account, select Google Assistant, then Wellness and finally Activity. In the next window you should see options to connect Assistant to GoogleFit or Fitbit accounts.
Only one of these can be selected at a time, but this gives Fitbit a clear advantage over rivals like Garmin for those with Nest-equipped houses.
This feature began rolling-out last week but now appears to be widely available.
It is a reminder, though, that the wider integration of Fitbit and Google is proving slower to develop than some predicted.
Fitbit is yet to release a watch with Google’s software, leaving Samsung to claim the spotlight with the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4. Fitbit CEO James Park has confirmed the company’s intention to release such a watch, as far back as a year ago, but the next high-profile WearOS watch on the cards is Google’s own Pixel Watch rather than a follow-up to the Fitbit Versa 3 or Fitbit Sense. The Fitbit Charge 5 is the most important Fitbit tracker released since the acquisition. It arrived in September 2021, and largely continued in a familiar trajectory by bringing some Fitbit Sense features to a smaller band.

Microsoft has announced the beta for the new Outlook for Windows, which will make the desktop email client a lot more like the web version. While screenshots and an entire build of the app were recently leaked, Microsoft’s announcement gives us a good look at what kind of features we can expect to see coming to our inboxes.
According to Microsoft’s Tuesday post, Outlook will be getting quite a few new features in addition to an updated design. For starters, it’ll integrate with Loop, Microsoft’s system for collaborating on things like polls, task lists, and more throughout Office. There’s also a new system for attaching files. If you’ve got something stored in the cloud, you can type the “@” symbol and then the filename, and you’ll get a list of matching files ready to add to an email.
Microsoft’s also added a few calendar and to-do features. Some of them are simple, like the ability to pin emails to the top of your inbox so they’ll stay in your face until you deal with them. You’ll be able to drag emails over to a panel and set them as to-do items or as calendar events if you want to book time to respond — and after you’ve done that, you can look at the new calendar view that shows your task lists, notes, and various other customizable pieces of information alongside an actual calendar.
I don’t want to make it seem like Microsoft’s reinventing email here. The app is still decidedly Outlook, even if it seems like it’ll just be a very fancy web view. But a few of these features remind me of what got me so excited about the now-defunct Mailbox app that Dropbox bought way back in the day. I’m also happy to see a revamp of the calendar interface; I’ve always hated the one that’s in the current desktop version of Outlook.
Microsoft’s post mentions myriad other features, too. For example, when responding to a calendar invite, you can specify whether you’ll be attending in person or virtually; the inbox-cleaning Sweep feature will be included in the app; and Outlook will pin messages that it thinks are important if you seem to have missed them. You can see the full list of features, along with screenshots and descriptions, on Microsoft’s page.
As always with apps based on web technology, I do have a little bit of trepidation around this future update, especially its performance. I also assume that longtime Outlookusers will have to endure one heck of an adjustment period, especially if it’s the main app they spend their days in. But, at the same time, I very much like the idea of Outlook having the same functionality on the web and in the desktop app, rather than making us use two substantially different UIs. Plus, the features that Microsoft’s showing off mesh very well with how I view email. So, color me cautiously optimistic.
If you feel the same, you may be able to try it out yourself — though you will need a commercial or educational Microsoft account. If you’ve checked that box, you can sign up to be an Office Insider and join the Beta Channel. Once you’ve done that and updated to the latest version of Outlook, there should be a toggle letting you switch to the new version. Of course, do keep in mind that it is a beta; be sure you’re comfortable with running your email through a program that’s still in the works.

iPad Air 4 models now available on the Apple Refurbished Store❗️

Apple on Monday began selling the Air 4, also known as the 2020 iPad Air, in its US Refurbished Store. There, customers can get the previous generation iPad Air for a lower price, which is great for those who don’t need everything the latest iPad Air offers.
Customers can now save up to $100 when buying the 4th-generation iPad Air when compared to the retail price. The 64GB model with Wi-Fi connectivity is available for $469, while the 256GB version is priced at $599. At this time, there are no refurbished models with Wi-Fi + Cellular connectivity available.
Apple Refurbished Store offers the iPad Air 4 in all its original colors, which are: Space Gray, Silver, Green, Rose Gold, and Sky Blue.
The 4th-generation iPad Air was introduced in September 2020 and it features a 10.9-inch Retina LCD display, A14 Bionic chip with 4GB of RAM, 12-megapixel rear camera, 7-megapixel front camera, and a USB-C connector. 5G home internet comparison: How T-Mobile and Verizon stack up with price, speed, incentives❗️

5G home internet competition in the US is heating up and providers like T-Mobile and Verizon are offering some big incentives to attract customers. Follow along for speed, pricing, and fine details for each provider in our 5G home internet comparison.
It’s been just about a year since Verizon and T-Mobile launched their 5G home internet services and they’re both building momentum.
T-Mobile recently said its 5G home internet is available for 40 million households and Verizon shared in January that its 5G home internet is available for 20 million.
While Verizon upped its incentives in January with deals like 50% off for existing customers, T-Mobile announced its own similar promotions in early May.
AT&T doesn’t have 5G home internet, but it does offer a 4G home internet for rural customers and businesses. While it lags far behind and T-Mobile across the board, we’ll include it in the comparisons below for reference.
Verizon offers the fastest potential speeds for both downloads and uploads, while T-Mobile‘s service is more widely available.
With both, keep in mind that your average 5G speeds will vary based on your location and coverage. And yeah, AT&T’s 4G home internet is abysmally slow.
One more detail, to get access to the 300-1,000 Mbps download speeds with Verizon, you’ll need to pick its 5G Home Plus plan.
Both T-Mobile and Verizon are offering very affordable pricing, particularly for customers who bundle an eligible cellular plan. That brings T-Mobile’s 5G home internet down to $30/month and Verizon’s is even cheaper at $25/month.
Even if you don’t have your smartphone service through either of them, the plans are still affordable with T-Mobile and Verizon both at $50/month with autopay.
AT&T’s offering is not only more expensive, but much slower, has a data cap, and requires a $99 installation.
Both T-Mobile and Verizon have a tempting list of incentives to get customers to leave traditional broadband providers.
Both make it free to switch by covering up to $500 in early termination fees, have free trials, and are throwing in extra perks like free streaming devices and streaming services.
Verizon is offering its own Stream TV set-top box for free while T-Mobile is offering $50 that can be used for any streaming device including Apple TV .
With T-Mobile and Verizon both working hard on compelling 5G home internet service, consumers benefit with affordable pricing, free trials, no contracts, and more.
Hopefully, with the launch of more C-band 5G coverage this year, we’ll see AT&T officially enter the 5G home internet space which will bring more choice and competition.
At this point, if you’re unhappy with your broadband provider, doing a risk-free trial with T-Mobile or Verizon’s 5G home internet is easy, and you can even try it out alongside your existing internet.
It’s hard to say if there’s a clear winner between T-Mobile and Verizon. T-Mobile gets points for greater availability and a lifetime price lock. And Verizon is ahead with a cheaper price for bundlers and faster overall speeds.

How to remove your personal information from Google search results❗️

Once something is on the internet, it's almost impossible to take it down. But Google now makes it easier for anyone to request the removal of their personal information from Google's own search results.
Google has been broadly against a global "right to be forgotten," a facet of European law that allows EU citizens to demand that companies, including tech giants, delete personal data that is stored about them. But that hasn't stopped Google from giving users the tools to limit what information it collects as a company, as well as tools to let children and young adults request the removal of their photos from Googles image search results.
Now with its new search results removal request feature, you can ask Google to remove personally identifiable information about yourself (or someone you represent) from its search results, like a phone number, email address or your home address, and other sensitive information that could be used to break into your online accounts, like login credentials. Google said this can help victims of doxxing, where information about a person is published online without their consent, often with malicious intent.
Google lets you request to remove your personal information from its search results. To request to remove your search results, first note what Google needs from you in order to process the removal request. Google explains what kinds of personal information it will remove, such as confidential government ID identification numbers, bank account numbers, images of ID documents, as well as contact information, like phone numbers and email addresses.
When you're ready, head to Google's search results removal form and hit Remove information you see in Google , then In Google's search results and on a website . At this point, Google will give you guidance if you want to reach out to the website host, but otherwise you can say No, I prefer not to contact the website host and just move on with the form.
At this point Google should ask you which search results you want removed. You should select Personal info, like ID numbers and private documents , then select the kind of personal information that you want removed, such as your contact information, private medical documents or other government identity documents. From here, you should fill out the form with your corresponding information, including your full name, country of residence, your best contact email address and the list of web addresses of your personal information. You can grab the web addresses of infringing search results from your browser's address bar. The final question on this form is if your personal information pertains to doxxing, which Google asks if the information is "being shared with malicious, threatening, or harassing intent." If this is the case, select Yes .
You will have to provide all of the web addresses where you have found your information. That can mean both the web address of the webpage that has your information — and the web addresses of the Google search results page. You may also have to take and submit screenshots of search results to help Google narrow down the request to you. You can submit up to 1,000 web addresses at a time. Once you're done, check the signature form at the bottom of the form. Remember, removing your information from Google's search results is not a panacea. Google's request feature will not automatically remove your personal information from the websites your data is hosted on, but it makes it more difficult for others to discover the data without the aid of Google's search algorithm. Filling out the search removal form is also not a guarantee that Google will take action on your behalf. Google said it will "evaluate all content on the web page to ensure that we're not limiting the availability of other information that is broadly useful, for instance in news articles." In cases where your information appears part of a public record, such as a court filing or a government website, Google said it wouldn't remove those search results.
